LANDISVILLE — Of the 12 girls wrestlers from Franklin County who competed in the District 3 Championships on Saturday at Manheim Township H.S., four extended their seasons an extra week.
Shippensburg’s Olivia Kearns captured the title at 118 pounds and will try to improve on her fifth-place finish last year at the PIAA Championships, which begin Thursday at Giant Center in Hershey.
She will be joined by a trio of top-4 placewinners from Chambersburg at the state tournament — Reagan Evans (3rd at 136), Aulana Stanton (3rd at 170) and Jessica Li (4th at 106).
Kearns, a sophomore, was simply untouchable at 118.
The defending district champion, now 25-1, struck for pins inside the first minute of each of her four bouts, in 0:43, 0:32, 0:39 and then in 0:42 in the final against Gianna Montegari of Governor Mifflin.
Evans and Stanton stacked up similar days for Chambersburg, each going 4-1 with a loss in the semifinals.
Stanton (34-3), a junior, lost big to Gettysburg’s Fallon Jackson, but squeezed out an ultimate tiebreaker win over Aambur Brletich of Northern to qualify for states in the consolation semifinals, then notched a pin for third place.
In that consy semifinal, Brletich went ahead 2-1 with 33 seconds left, but Stanton produced an escape with 5 seconds to go in regulation to tie it. It was scoreless through sudden victory, then each wrestler rode the other for 30 seconds.
“It was Aulana’s choice (for position in the ultimate tiebreaker), and I was thinking take top, because she had ridden the girl earlier,” Trojan coach Josh Sherman said. “But (assistant coach) Joey (Finkey) suggested taking bottom and Aulana was confident she could get out. She gave me a cardio workout.”
But Stanton made it work — barely — by escaping Brletich’s clutches with only 5 seconds left for a 3-2 win.
Sherman said, “She wrestled very well to get into the state tournament.”
Evans, a sophomore with a 36-2 mark, appeared to be in good shape in her semifinal match against Dallastown’s Kenna Hoffman, trailing 1-0 after two periods and choosing to take bottom. But Hoffman wrapped her up in a quick cradle and pinned her in 10 seconds.
“We chose down and simply got caught in a cradle,” Sherman said. “That’s a move we had not seen (Hoffman) use before, but she hit a good one. Reagan then bounced right back and won two more to get third place. She needed to have a short-term memory after the loss and she did.”
Evans won by pin in the consolation semifinals and for third place, so all four of her wins came via first-period falls.
Li (28-10), a junior who will make her second trip to states, had a wild ride at 106. She lost big twice to Gettysburg’s Taylor Keckler, and two of Li’s 4 wins were nailbiters..
In the third round of consolations, she slipped by Vanessa Houck of Hempfield 2-0, with the only points coming from a reversal with 0:02 left on the clock. In the consy semifinals, Li and Emily Boyer of Kutztown were scoreless through 3 periods, then Li converted a takedown with 7 seconds left in sudden victory for the 3-0 win.
Sherman said, “Jess has been lights out for the last month and a half, and once she lost her first one, she wrestled her heart out and worked her way back. The goal is always qualifying (for states), and she did that.”
Two other area wrestlers came up with 2-2 records, but did not place — freshman Iley Dinsmore of James Buchanan (136) and senior Annabelle Tracey of Waynesboro (155).
