Trojans beat Wilson; will play for 5th Wednesday

WEST LAWN — Chambersburg’s boys basketball team made the long trip to the Reading area worth it on Monday night.

The Trojans took a lead early and never quite let it slip away, defeating Wilson 51-46 in a District 3 Class 6A consolation game.

Chambersburg (18-7) will host No. 8 seed Cedar Cliff (18-7), a 55-49 winner over Cedar Crest, on Wednesday for fifth place in the district. Wilson (16-9) host Cedar Crest (14-11) for seventh place on Wednesday.

The Trojans had lost 46-35 at Wilson in December, but this time took a 31-22 lead after 3 quarters, then made 12 of 20 free throws in the fourth period, when the Bulldogs crept to within one point.

“It was awesome to get a bounce-back win for third time this season (the other two were against Cumberland Valley and State College),” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “Wilson is a well-coached and competitive team, and a very tough defensive team — one of the best in District 3.”

The Trojans spread the scoring around for 3 quarters and outscored the Bulldogs in each quarter.

Shreffler said, “They tested our patience and resolve to be really solid in the half court in terms of execution and shot selection. I was proud of how we responded.”

In the fourth, when Wilson made its run, Chambersburg was helped by Grayson Kegerreis, who scored 10 of his 17 points in the final quarter.

“We did just enough in the fourth quarter to keep them at bay,” Shreffler said. “Finding a way to finish off the win when it got to just a point difference was huge.”

Landon Buhrman scored 13 points for the Trojans, and Colton Cornwell tallied 9.

Shreffler said, “A couple of keys defensively were how we defended No. 0 (Michael Glover). He hurt us the last time we played (14 points), so it was huge that Seth (Gilliam) shut him out. And Grayson did a phenomenal job on No. 23 (Correll Akings), particularly in the first half.”

Jayden Lockhart led Wilson with 10 points. They got scoring from 7 different players in a 24-point fourth period.

“The energy in the gym like we had for the last two games wasn’t there tonight,” Shreffler said, “but I’m appreciative of our cheerleaders and small contingent of fans who made the two-hour trek to support us.”
