BOYS BASKETBALL

McConnellsburg 57, Berlin Brothersvalley 41.  On February 13 at the Claysburg-Kimmel High School, showplace for the Inter-County Conference (ICC) basketball tournament, the Spartans (ICC-South champion) and Berlin Brothersvalley Mountaineers (ICC-West champion) faced off in the semi-final round to decide the championship round Saturday to play Claysburg-Kimmel (ICC-East champion) the victor earlier over Williamsburg (ICC-North champion).  The Spartans’ were victorious, winning the second through fourth quarters by 16 points and steadily outdistancing the competition.

In the first quarter each squad squared up at eight apiece.  For the second, the Spartans doubled up over the Mountaineers 13-6 to take a seven-point lead into the break on Hoyt Glenn’s nine-point contribution.  Over the third quarter, the Spartans’ most productive, had Glenn’s 12 points leading the charge to close at 41-28.  The Mountaineers continued to battle and kept the fourth quarter scoring close (16-13 Spartans favor) but never closed the earlier gap.

The Spartans (22-1, 8-0 ICC-S) were led by Glenn with a double-double (his seventh this season) of 29 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, four steals, and two blocks.  Shaffer Earley also hit big with 15 points and seven rebounds.  Brayden Ramsey netted six points, four rebounds, seven assists, three steals, and two blocks.  Jake Hann had six points and seven boards.

McConnellsburg’s is ranked No. 1 in Class 2A in District 5, having achieved a success rate in 84.8% of their 92 quarters played and held the lead during 95.7% of those quarters and with an average score of 64.1 points to opponents’ 32.7.

Berlin Brothersvalley (16-6, 8-0 ICC-W) was led by Carson Janidlo with 14 points, then Matthew Miller with 10 points.  Ryan Janidlo earned eight points.
