Chbg. roundup: Herd cools red-hot Trojans with upset win

BOYS BASKETBALL
Carlisle 68, Chambersburg 63: The Thundering Herd played an inspired game and led all the way to pull off a surprising upset win over the Trojans in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game in Carlisle on Wednesday night.

Colton Cornwell

The Herd is now 4-16 and won their first division game of the season in 13 tries. Chambersburg (14-6, 9-5 MPC) had come in winning 10 of its last 11 games.

Carlisle outscored the Trojans 16-8 in the first quarter and the closest Chambersburg got after that was within 6 points twice inside the final minute of play.

“Carlisle played extremely well,” Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said. “They shot the ball well, got to a lot more loose balls than us, and put four guys in double-figure scoring.

“Conversely, we struggled to convert good looks, created a number of loose ball chances but didn’t get enough of them, and lacked the balanced scoring that has been a staple of our success.”

The loss dampened a spectacular game by Trojan senior guard Colton Cornwell, who poured in a career-high 38 points. He scored 8 points in the first quarter, 11 in the second, 5 in the third and 14 in the fourth. He nailed six 3-pointers.

Landon Buhrman added 9 points for Chambersburg.

For Carlisle, sophomore Isaiah Robinson scored 19 points.

Shreffler said, “We have to continue to get better at both ends of the floor. There will be nights where we’re not efficient on the offensive end, so our defense has to pick up the slack, and vice versa. Tonight we didn’t do either.”
