GIRLS BASKETBALL
McConnellsburg 35 Northern Bedford County 32. A turnabout fourth quarter bolstered a Lady Spartan win over the visiting Lady Panthers in a cross-conference game at home on January 20th.
The Spartans hadn’t done well against the Panthers NBC (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups) but made up for that last night in a nail-biter game where they pulled off a 35-32 win. The victory was a much-needed relief for the Spartans as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
The Spartans put up four more in the second quarter that meant the difference down the final stretch. In the fourth quarter, the Spartans went on a seven-point run when Sydney Buterbaugh hit a trey and Brookelynn Gelvin made two consecutive layups. The Spartans won the quarter 12-5 and were able to hold off last minute Panther attempts to the final buzzer.
The Spartans’ (8-7, 1-2 ICC-S) success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Gelvin led the charge by putting up 11 points. Journie Jefferson and Buterbaugh each added nine. Genesis Clevenger pulled ten boards while Jefferson and Gelvin each pulled eight, marking an improvement in physical hustle for second shot attempts and defensive control.
The Panthers (9-7) were led by Amberly Detterline, who dropped a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards, and Alyssa Yeatts, who earned six points. Halle Baker pulled 10 rebounds.
