West Perry ends Blue Devils’ season with 31-13 win

GREENCASTLE — Greencastle-Antrim needed a win over a 7-2 West Perry team on Friday night to even have a chance to earn a District 3 Class 5A playoff berth.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils trailed only 17-13.

But the Mustangs scored two more touchdowns to salt the win away and take a 31-13 Mid Penn Colonial victory at Kaley Field.

“I was proud of the boys tonight,” G-A coach Jason Thurston said. “We played well. We showed a lot of self-discipline and we cleaned up the penalties.”

Early in the game, Greencastle’s running game was clicking. The Blue Devils, who finished 4-6 (3-5 MPC), scored a touchdown to go ahead 7-0 and were on the move again, but West Perry picked off a pass in the end zone.

Thurston said, “We were running the ball well and controlling the line of scrimmage. We had a chance to go up 14-0, but we decided to take a shot in the end zone and it got intercepted.”

The Mustangs then completed a short pass along the sideline, and when a tackle was missed, it turned into a long touchdown to tie the game 7-7 until the third quarter.

A pair of mistakes on punts — one a snap over the punter’s head and another a very short punt — gave West Perry two golden opportunities and they converted with a touchdown and a field goal.

But when G-A scored its second touchdown, it was within 17-13 early in the fourth.

Thurston said, “They just pulled away in the end, and we couldn’t move the ball very well in our two-minute offense.

“I think the kids have a lot to be proud of. I think we showed a lot of growth and we had a great group of seniors. I believe we took a step forward this season.”
