Blazer girls subdue New Life

FREDERICK, Md. — The Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers scored 19 points each in the second and third quarters and went on to defeat New Life Christian 49-27 Friday in a Mason Dixon Christian Conference girls basketball game.

“We did start a bit slow in the first quarter,” Blazers coach Corey Collins said. “Once we got our defense set and rotations correct, we started to get into a groove.”

The Blazers (11-7, 7-3 MDCC) led only 9-8 at the end of the first period, but their lead blossomed to 28-11 by halftime and 47-16 at the end of the third quarter.

Addison Teal led the Blazers with 23 points. Makenna Morris and Kaitlyn Garvin each scored eight. Peyton Bricker and C.C. Hott each added four points, and Reagan Witmer scored two.

Morris had a strong all-around game with 12 rebounds, five assists and four steals. Witmer contributed six rebounds, Garvin had four assists and four steals, and Chloe Smith pulled down five rebounds.

“Makenna was able to get nine rebounds in the second quarter alone,” Collins said. “Kaitlyn was strong at the top of our zone, never letting them get comfortable. On the offensive side, Addison was in a zone. If she got a bit of a space, she was knocking it down. Our ball movement as a team was fantastic for us to get 11 assists, which was over half of our baskets.”

The Blazers wrapped up the third seed in next week’s MDCC playoffs. They will host New Life in a first-round game next Tuesday.
