Blazer girls’ defense stifles Grace

The Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers pulled away in the second half and defeated Grace Academy 34-14 Tuesday evening in their Mason Dixon Christian Conference girls basketball opener.

The Blazers (4-3, 1-0 MDCC) survived a tough shooting night, hitting only 25% of their shots from the field (15-for-61) and 30% from the foul line. However, they forced 18 steals and committed only 12 turnovers.

“We won this game with our defense,” Blazers coach Corey Collins said. “The girls did a great job executing our game plan on that end. Kaitlyn (Garvin) was a huge spark for us on the offensive side giving us a season high of eight points.”

The Blazers led 14-8 at the half and then took command by outscoring Grace 11-3 in the third period and 9-3 in the fourth.

Makenna Morris led the Blazers in scoring with 13 points, including seven of their nine fourth-period points. She also contributed six steals.

Addison Teal added nine points, seven rebounds and a team-leading seven steals. Garvin had a team-high nine rebounds to go along with her eight points. Reagan Witmer supplied eight rebounds and two points, and Chloe Smith added a bucket and five rebounds.
