GREENCASTLE — East Pennsboro outscored Greencastle-Antrim 3-0 in the second half and eliminated the Blue Devils from the District 3 Class 3A playoffs in the first round.
G-A led 2-1 at halftime Monday night at Kaley Field, but the Panthers tied it up, and then took the lead on a direct kick. Greencastle tried to move some players up to offense and EP was able to score once more for insurance.
“We moved Abbie Wolfe up from center back to midfield after they went ahead,” Blue Devil coach Jamie Coy said. “It was a calculated risk, but one we were willing to take. She’s a strong player and it helped. We out-shot East Penn in the second half, but their keeper made some kay saves.”
Greencastle, which finished 12-6-1, took the lead when Brooke Guthrie sent a through pass toward goal and Cat Marchiano pounced on it and scored. After EP (15-3) evened the score, Callie Izer got past two defenders and scored for G-A.
The Panthers’ go-ahead goal came on a free kick when the shot hit the far post in the upper corner and ricocheted into the net.
Coy said, “This a rough loss, not just the game itself, but because the season ended as soon as the final whistle was blown. We asked the girls to leave it all on the field tonight, and that is what they did.
“Our team captains — Abbie Wolfe, Maddie Koons and Hailey Baker — were great examples of teamwork, hard work and good sportsmanship. The entire team played with heart tonight.”
