Missed chances haunt Blue Devils in 15-13 loss to Bubblers

GREENCASTLE — Greencastle-Antrim missed on too many scoring opportunities and Boiling Springs made it pay Friday night.

The Bubblers picked up a 15-13 win in a Mid Penn Colonial football game at Kaley Field, holding off the Blue Devils in a last-gasp attempt to pull out a win.

G-A (2-7, 1-6 MPC) got the ball back with 1:41 left and got to around the 50 with 8 seconds left. Quarterback Sean Marshall launched a long pass that ace receiver Carter McCauley hauled in inside the Bubblers’ 10.

But before the Blue Devils could get downfield and spike the ball, the clock ran out.

“The rule is the ball has to be set and the chains have to be set before the clock can start,” Greencastle coach Devin McCauley said. “But the official said that when he’s ready and the chains are set, he’s going to start the clock.

“But we didn’t lose the game because of the last play. We missed too many chances before that and made too many turnovers. The turnovers made the difference.”

There was a sequence in the first half in which the Blue Devils’ defense produced three stops in a row. But on the first play after the ball changed hands, G-A gave it right back — the first on a fumble, the second on an interception. After the third stop, the Bubblers punted to the G-A 5. Greencastle lost yards on the next play and Marshall was tackled in the end zone for a safety on the next play.

The safety proved to be huge. When Greencastle scored its final touchdown in the last quarter, it went for two points and the tie, but Boiling Springs (2-7, 1-7 MPC) stuffed the play.

“It was unfortunate end to the game, but we didn’t play well,” McCauley said. “We did play better in the second half, but they have a good running game and they were able to get some first downs and run the clock.”

Carter McCauley finished with two TD catches — for 25 yards in the first quarter and for 11 in the fourth period from Marshall. He caught 7 balls for 136 yards.

“The kids didn’t quit and drove it down the field and got close at the end,” Devin McCauley said. “The kids always fight and play hard.”
