GIRLS BASKETBALL
Waynesboro 39, Greencastle 32: The Maidens held the lead from midway through the second quarter on and never let the Blue Devils get closer than 3 points in the second half, upsetting G-A in a Mid Penn Colonial rivalry game Tuesday night in Greencastle.

Ellie Bigler

The Blue Devils (8-4, 5-2 MPC) were outscored 11-5 in the second quarter and 11-4 in the third as Waynesboro (8-5, 4-3 MPC) took a 30-18 lead into the fourth period. The Maidens took their biggest lead (29-16) on a 3-pointer by Charlotte Rhodes.

But Greencastle finally started to create some turnovers and hit some shots in the fourth period, when they increased their defensive pressure and outscored ‘Boro, 14-9.

Threes by Ellie Bigler and Kylie Kerns reduced the lead to 30-25, and after the teams traded baskets, Kerns hit another 3-pointer and Haley Noblit made 1 of 2 free throws to bring the score to 34-31 with less than two minutes to play.

Then came perhaps the key play of the game. The Blue Devils had several chances to tie the game, but missed several shots, and, finally, Waynesboro’s Addie Shaull made a steal and drove to the basket for a shot. It did not go in, but teammate Genesis Alvarez scored on a putback to make it 36-31.

Down the stretch, Nikki Davis, Alvarez and Marissa Hadin each made 1 of 2 free throws to keep G-A at bay.

For the game, Greencastle made only 11 of 56 shots (19.6%), including only 4 of 29 (13.8%) from 3-point range.

Noblit and Kerns each scored 11 points for G-A. Noblit had 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals, Kerns had 4 boards, Bigler scored 5 points and Callie Izer grabbed 10 rebounds.

Davis led Waynesboro with 11 points and Shaull added 9.
