Blazer girls pounce on Highland View early for opening win

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — The Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers opened their season with a 43-19 victory over Highland View Academy Thursday in a non-league girls basketball game.

The Blazers had things under control from the beginning, outscoring Highland View 18-0 in the first quarter and piling up a 28-1 lead by halftime.

“We were able to get out to a really quick start defensively,” Blazers coach Corey Collins said. “We forced a lot of turnovers, which gave us easy baskets. Makenna (Morris) got us going by scoring our first couple points. It was complete team effort from start to finish.”

The Blazers’ scoring was balanced, with Victoria Price scoring 11 points while Morris and Sydney Wiegand fired in 10 apiece. Also scoring for the Blazers were Addison Teal with four points, Kaitlyn Garvin and Maura Minnier with three each, and Ava Fager with two.

Haven Moats led the team with six rebounds and added three blocked shots. Julia Waltz pulled down four rebounds, and Wiegand had three assists and four blocked shots.

The Blazers play the Frederick Warriors Friday evening in their home opener.
