Big second half carries Cedar Cliff over Shippensburg

By JD Davidson

Week one was not kind to the Shippensburg Greyhounds as they dropped their home opener to Cedar Cliff 29-13.

After a sluggish first quarter things exploded In the second.  The Colts capped off an eight play 80 yard drive with a Bennett Secrest 1 yard run.

Shippensburg responded when freshman Mark Carothers Jr. returned the kick 84 yards to the Colts six.  Two plays later quarterback Brady Maciejewski scampered in for the tying score at the 8:40 mark,

Cedar Cliff broke the tie with a 27 yard field goal by Carter Enders with 58.6 left in the half.  But the Hounds got a quick score before the half to lead 13-10 at the break.  Maciejewski hit Kaden Shope for 18 yards, then hooked up with Aydin Mentzer for five.  With the clock running Maciejewski hit a streaking Shope down the near sideline for a 65 yard score.

It turned into the Erik Schriver show in the second half.  Schriver posted three TD runs of 4, 7 and 3 and the Colts D tossed a second half shutout.  Schriver toted the ball 15 times in the second half for 113 yards.

Schriver finished with 22 carries and 141 yards.  The Hounds never got the running game going and the pass game suffered.  Ship had 36 plays total 128 yards.  The Colts had 66 plays for 318.  Neither team converted on third down going 0-19 combined.

Up next for the Hounds a trip to Newville to take on Big Spring Friday night.
