SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 9, James Buchanan 2: The Blue Devils produced 11 hits and got a quality start from Kaidyn ZImmerman to capture a Mid Penn Colonial victory over the Rockets at home on Tuesday afternoon.
Zimmerman (4-1) allowed 4 hits and one earned run while walking 7 batters and striking out 8.
Greencastle (10-2, 9-2 MPC) put up four extra-base hits — triples by Meadow Gambacurta, Caroline Logsdon and Sydney Orndorff, and a double by Alexis Jones.
Gambacurta was 3-for-4 with 2 runs batted in, Logsdon had 3 RBIs and Orndorff and Makayla Jerin each had a pair of hits.
The Blue Devils, who led just 3-1 until they scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, also stole 9 bases in the game.
BASEBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 11, James Buchanan 0: Jace Szaflarski came within one hit of a five-inning perfect game on Tuesday afternoon in Mercersburg to lead the Blue Devils to a Mid Penn Colonial win over the Rockets.
Szaflarski did not walk a batter, struck out 8 and the only baserunner for JB came on a fourth-inning single by Parker Summers.
“He went to a 3-0 count on their leadoff batter, but from that point on, he was in control,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said. “He located his fastball well and had a lot of bite on his slider. And we played great defense behind him.”
Carter Reid had a big day at the plate for the Blue Devils (9-4, 5-4 MPC). He hit a three-run double in the second inning, an RBI triple in the third and he ended the game in the fifth when his sacrifice fly to right field brought in two runners.
Shaner said, “Austin Wyand was on second and when he got to third they weren’t paying attention so I sent him.”
Reid was 2-for-2 with 6 RBIs, Ethan Ford and Carter McCauley each had 2 hits, Ford and Darren Kline had runs batted in and McCauley hit a double.
BOYS TRACK & FIELD
Greencastle-Antrim 104, Gettysburg 48: The Blue Devils clinched at least a tie for the Mid Penn Colonial title Tuesday afternoon in Gettysburg with a convincing win over the Warriors.
Greencastle (5-0, 5-0 MPC) won 10 of 11 events on the track.
“Overall, I thought we competed well,” G-A coach Devin McCauley said. “Looking forward to finishing the dual season next (Tuesday) at home against Waynesboro.”
Double winners for the Blue Devils included Bill Harper in the 110 (16.3) and 300 hurdles (44.1), Seth Stouffer in the 100 (10.81) and 200 (22.6), Hayden Parks in the 800 (2:00.6) and 3200 (10:36.7) and Conner Wright in the discus (114-10.25) and javelin (151-0).
Other individual winners were Dalton Noblit in the 1600 (4:30.6), Iyshone Coleman in the 400 (53.3), Tavon Cooper in the long jump (20-7.25) and William Schaeffer in the high jump (5-10).
The 4 x 800 relay team of Joel Amstutz, Kyle Baker, Parks and Noblit ran a time of 8:42.8 to win, and the 4 x 400 squad of Stouffer, Coleman, Harper and Parks won in 3:35.1.
GIRLS TRACK & FIELD
Greencastle-Antrim 80.5, Gettysburg 69.5: The Warriors got the jump on he Blue Devils on the track, but Greencastle took first place in every field event and used that to win a Mid Penn Colonial meet Tuesday afternoon on the road.
The Blue Devils (3-2, 3-2 MPC) outscored Gettysburg 47-15 in the field events.
Three athletes won two events for G-A — Claire Paci in the 800 (2:28.9) and 1600 (5:18.1), Jaylynn Schmuck placed first in the long jump (15-3) and triple jump (33-6.5), while Darcie Holdsworth captured the shot put (28-5) and javelin (106-6).
Also in the field, Piper Linn won the pole vault at 10-6, Sophie Bitner took the high jump at 4-8 and Bailey Hurley was first in the discus (109-3).
On the track, the 4 x 100 team of Mary Murray, Aqueelah Lindsay, Schmuck and Brianna Woodring took first in 52-1.
“We had some good PRs and did what we needed to do,” G-A coach Devin McCauley said.
