F.C. TIP-OFF: Lady Rockets trip Trojans to take 3rd place

WAYNESBORO — James Buchanan had a fine shooting game, from the field and from the free throw line, and rolled to a third-place finish on the girls side of the Franklin County Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Waynesboro.

The Rockets led Chambersburg 11-8 midway through the first quarter, then simply took off, using a 17-0 run to take control for good and beat the Trojans 69-25. MacKenzie Stoner highlighted the burst of scoring with a nifty turnaround jumper, followed by a 3-pointer on the next possession.

Stoner led JB (1-1) with 15 points and Carly Sollenberger added 13.

Chambersburg coach Blake Schildhauer said, “That No. 45 (Stoner) and 21 (Sollenberger) are fantastic athletes, and they killed us on offense.”

James Buchanan sank 10 of 13 shots in the first quarter (after going 1-for-17 in the same period the night before) and hit 22 of 48 for the game. At the free throw line, the Rockets banged in 21 of 25 shots.

JB’s defense was no slouch, either, helping to create 31 turnovers by the Trojans.

Schildhauer said, “We have a lot of growing to do — rebounding, defense and learning how to attack the basket. But I will say this, the girls are learning, and they are doing what we’ve been teaching them, so that’s good to see. We are getting better and making progress.”

For Chambersburg (0-2), Allie List hit a pair of 3-pointers for 6 points, and Joelle Rheam and Titi Kelley each scored 4 points.

For JB, in addition to Stoner and Sollenberger, Izzy Hoffeditz scored 9 and Sophia Stoner 8.

Stoner and the Trojans’ List were named to the all-tournament team.
