WRESTLING
Cumberland Valley 42, Chambersburg 21: The Trojans were not on top of their game Thursday in their season opener and it cost them in a Mid Penn Commonwealth defeat to the Eagles at CASHS Field House.
The night’s first match was a tossup that CV’s Spenser Machemer won 6-3 over Kelby Mixell, who led 2-1 after one period. But Machemer connected on takedowns in the second and third periods to earn the win.
A 6-2 win by Ryder Davenport at 160, fueled by a pair of takedowns, brought Chambersburg back to within 9-3, but the Eagles then rattled off five straight wins, including three pins and a forfeit, to take a huge 36-3 lead.
The Trojans managed wins in four of the final five bouts, but it was way too steep of a hill to climb. Rylan Carter picked up a pin in just 37 seconds at 113 and Anthony Colangelo also notched a fall at 138 to finish the match.
Also taking victories were Luke Mentzer at 120, with an 8-2 victory, and Karl Shindledecker at 126, who won 7-0.
Chambersburg competes in the Gettysburg Duals on Saturday.
