Trojan boys hoops team is still a work in progress

Shawn Shreffler

Shawn Shreffler, coaching in his 20th year at Chambersburg, has a 292-190 (.606) record.

The Chambersburg boys basketball team that takes the court Friday night in the Franklin County Tip-Off Tournament will not look exactly like the one that’s expected to show up later in the season.

Two likely Trojan starters are still recovering from injuries, so the team will be at less-than-full strength when it takes on James Buchanan at 8:30 Friday.

“When we have everybody, I hope we’ll be fighting with the top teams in our division,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “Right now, we have inexperienced guys filling roles they’ve never had before.”

The Trojans still have plenty of talent, though, even after losing eight seniors from last year’s 19-6 team that was second in the Mid Penn Commonwealth Division, second in the District 3 Tournament and fell in overtime in the first round of the PIAA Tournament.

The two returning senior starters are 6-foot-8 center-forward Tyler Collier, who averaged 6.6 points per game last year, and Seth Brouse (6.0 ppg), a 5-11 guard who takes over the point guard role full-time.

Shreffler said, “Tyler still hasn’t come near his potential yet, but from last year at this time to this year, he’s grown a lot with his play. When you’re 6-8, you may have some unrealistic expectations thrown at you, but he had a great offseason.”

Collier’s best game came in the state tournament, when he scored a season-high 18 points and asserted himself on defense and on the boards.

“That player is there,” Shreffler acknowledged, hoping he’ll see that version more in Collier’s final season.

Brouse played in both guard spots last year and displayed good ball-handling skills and the ability to score at times.

“He did some really good things for us last year,” Shreffler said, “like when we were short-handed for the one Harrisburg game, he played the whole game at point and had no turnovers. That’s hard to do. He’s got a lot of poise and moxie and he does not get rattled.

“When he’s needed to perform a role, he’s already shown he can do it. His versatility is a huge help.”

Terell Williams, a 6-2 junior guard, is still recovering from a football injury, but when returns he’ll have a good chance to raise his scoring average of 6.1 from a year ago.

Ethan Shreffler, a 6-0 guard who got some varsity time last year, is also getting over an injury.

The fifth projected starter is 6-4 senior forward Ty Holsopple, who has matured in his final season.

Shreffler said, “He was a ninth-grader who rarely played, then a sophomore who sat the bench for the JVs and who played JV as a junior. But Ty is a really hard worker with a tremendous motor and once he adjusts to playing varsity, he will help us.”

Chambersburg has size off the bench in 6-4 senior forward Maxwell Doctor, 6-2 senior DaQuan Rodgers and 6-2 junior Henry Shearer.

Backing up the guards are juniors Aaron Maynard (6-2), Kyere Morton (5-9), Tucker Perry (5-10) and Braden Byers (6-0).

Shreffler said, “Seth and Tyler and Ty are definite starters (for Friday), but where we go from there is a little bit of a question. We’ve gotten some good indications from our scrimmages.”

A year ago, Chambersburg leaned heavily on big-bodied forward Joel Torres for much of its scoring, so this year’s edition will have a different look.

“I think we’ll have more balanced scoring,” Trojan assistant coach Dennis Chamberlin said. “We can’t replace Joel, but we have seven or eight guys who could score in double figures on a given night.”

Shreffler said, “We’ll have a period of adjustment with all of the new guys playing now, and we’ll have to adjust again when the injured guys return.

“But when they do get back, I really like our pieces. We have a lot of really good basketball players. And the experience our inexperienced guys will get here at the beginning of the season will only help our depth for later, and that will be good for us.”

NOTES: For the tip-off event, held at the CASHS Field House this year, Friday’s schedule is: Waynesboro vs. Greencastle-Antrim girls, 4:00; Waynesboro vs. G-A boys, 5:30; Chambersburg vs. JB girls, 7:00, and Chambersburg vs. JB boys at 8:30 … Saturday’s times are the same, with the girls final at 7 and the boys final to follow.

The Trojans picked up two more MPC Commonwealth games with Altoona joining the league … Chambersburg will play Red Land in the Gettysburg Lions Tournament in late December, with the host Warriors and South Western also in the event … The Trojans’ opponent for the annual Dunks for Drew event on Jan. 12 is Shippensburg at 7:30 … Shreffler expects Harrisburg, Cumberland Valley and defending champion State College to be teams near the top of the division.
