Chambersburg’s Mary Kate Norcross captures Dist. 3 golf title

Chambersburg’s Mary Kate Norcross won the District 3 girls 3A golf title on Saturday.

YORK — Chambersburg senior Mary Kate Norcross will have fond memories of hole No. 1 at Briarwood West Golf Club.

Norcross birdied that hole for the second time Saturday in a playoff to defeat Ellen Wager of Manheim Township to win the District 3 Girls 3A Golf Championship. She shot a 3-over par 74 both days of the event.

“I wasn’t nervous for the playoff,” Norcross said. “But my swing was a little off today and my iron play wasn’t good. But on the playoff hole, I hit one to about 5-6 feet and made the putt. It was exciting.”

Also in 3A girls, Amanda Steier of Greencastle-Antrim shot 84 and placed ninth to take the final spot among the nine girls who qualified for the PIAA Eastern Regional Tournament on Oct. 15 at Golden Oaks in Fleetwood.

In boys play at Briarwood East, Devin Smith of Waynesboro shot 76 to finish in a tie for fourth, and Chambersburg’s Karsen Rush also shot 76 to tie for ninth. Both will advance to regionals.

Norcross was a birdie machine Saturday, scoring birds on Nos. 1, 3, 10, 14 and 18 in her round, before duplicating her feat on No. 1 in the playoff.

“That might be the most birdies I’ve had in a round,” she said.

Chambersburg coach Mark Yost said, “She birdied 14, then parred 15, 16 and 17, then birdied No. 18 to tie it up. It was absolutely fun to watch. She played really well, and it’s such a positive to put up that many birdies.”

After finishing the round, Norcross thought she had finished one stroke behind Wager.

“They were checking the scores, and we heard them say there would be a playoff,” Norcross said. “I had no idea. I thought Ellen had beaten me by one.”

Norcross, who has made a verbal commitment to St. Francis, is the Trojans’ first District 3 girls golf champion since Mallory Cortis in 2010.

Smith, who held the lead after the first day at 2-under, managed only one birdie to shoot nines of 39-37, as Central York’s Carson Bacha rallied to win with a 4-under 68.

Rush was in a three-way for ninth, and he had only one birdie for the day.

Yost said, “Karsen did what he needed to do to advance.”

The Trojans’ Grayson Hopple nearly made it all the way back after shooting 76, but fell one shot short of qualifying for regionals, along with four other players. They had a playoff to decide the first alternate, and Hopple had a birdie and than a par to win that tile.

“That was a nice accomplishment to come back like that,” Yost said.

In boys 2A, James Buchanan’s Caleb Reath fell just short of making regionals. Only the top eight move on and he tied for eighth after shooting an 81. Littlestown’s Devin Peart shot 78 to tie Reath, and won the tiebreaker on the first playoff hole.
