HERSHEY — Three Chambersburg golfers and three other Franklin County players survived the first-day cut at the District 3 Golf Championships at Briarwood G.C. in York on Friday.

In Class 3A boys, Waynesboro’s Devin Smith leads the field after shooting a 2-under par 70. Trojan Karsen Rush shot 74 and is in 10th place, while teammate Grayson Hopple just made the cut with an 81.

In Class 3A girls, Chambersburg’s Mary Kate Norcross is in a three-way tie for first place after firing a 3-over 74. Amanda Steier of Greencastle-Antrim is seventh with a 77.

In 2A boys, James Buchanan’s Caleb Reath shot 80 and is tied for sixth.

The top 18 boys and top nine girls in 3A qualify for next week’s PIAA Eastern Regional, while the top eight advance in 2A boys. The second and final round of District 3 play is Saturday.

Norcross carded a trio of birdies (Nos. 7, 14 and 16) in her round, which puts her in a tie with Abby Han of Hershey and Ellen Wager of Manheim Township.

“It was a very positive round for Mary Kate,” Chambersburg coach Mark Yost said.

Steier’s round included a birdie at No. 18.

In 3A boys, Smith wrote down birdies on holes 1, 5, 10, 17 and 18 to combine with three bogeys for his outstanding round.

Rush also had plenty of birdies, scoring under par on Nos. 5, 7, 15 and 17.

Yost said, “Karsen has some ground to make up if he wants to win, but he’s well inside the line to advance.”

Hopple had been riding a hot streak lately, but struggled to just make the cut.

Yost said, “He just didn’t have his best stuff today, and he’d been playing so well. He’ll have to go low tomorrow to make the cut.”

Also for the Trojans, Spencer Rajtik shot 88 for the boys, and Heather Sanbower (88) and Megan Brandt (94) played in the girls competition. Sanbower missed the cut by two strokes, and Waynesboro’s Ella Lowry (87) missed by a single shot.

“Megan had maybe her best round of the year,” Yost said.
