McConnellsburg Blows Out Windber

McConnellsburg 11, Windber 1: The Spartans hosted the Windber Ramblers in a cross-conference match on September 24 and cruised to their eighth straight victory.
The Spartans struck in the opening two minutes when Hoyt Glenn scored off a Callen Mellott assist. Six minutes later, Lincoln McKelvy made it 2-0 with an assist from Ethan Lange. Windber answered with its lone goal, heading in a free kick from 45 yards over goalkeeper Cole Fletcher. Glenn responded in the 14th minute, scoring the Spartans’ third goal off a Noah Jefferson assist. Three minutes later, McKelvy drove home the fourth. In the 24th minute, Glenn headed Mellott’s well-placed corner kick into the net for the fifth goal. With fewer than four minutes remaining, Grady Shives collected a loose ball and tapped it into an open net. One minute later, Mellott scored from a Glenn assist, sending the Spartans into halftime with a 7-1 lead.
Three minutes into the second half, now with a running clock, Glenn collected the ball just beyond midfield, dribbled through the center, and passed right to McKelvy at the 18-yard line. Lincoln found the open left corner for the Spartans’ eighth goal. Two minutes later, Mellott sent the ball from midfield to Shives streaking down the right wing, and Shives scored from about 10 yards out. In the 17th minute, Lange passed right to Chris Ebersole, who scored from the six-yard line for the 10th goal. Three minutes later, Tucker Hedge found Ebersole, whose hard shot was mishandled by the goalkeeper. Ebersole converted the rebound at the goal line for the Spartans’ final goal.

The Spartans (8-0, 3-0 ICC-E) will host Southern Huntington County for a conference matchup on September 28 at 5 p.m.

McConnellsburg Shuts Out Windber
GIRLS SOCCER
McConnellsburg 3, Windber 0. The Lady Spartans hosted the Windber Lady Rambler in conference play on September 23, extending their winning streak to eight games and recording their seventh shutout of the season and fourth in a row.
McConnellsburg scored 11 minutes into the first half when Tenley Hendershot connected, with a Marin DeShong assist, against senior Rambler goalkeeper Rylee Baer. With under two minutes remaining, DeShong launched a kick from just inside midfield to a streaking Gemma Gordon who got to it just before the goalie rushing out to the 18-yard line to cover and kicked it to an open goal for the second score. The Spartans took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The third and final goal was scored by Gordon. The Spartan defense held the Rambler team scoreless and holding them to just eight shots.
Totals: MHS — 3 goals, 29 shots, 17 shots on goal, 4 corners, 5 goalkeeper saves, 6 fouls and 5 free kicks.
SHC — 0 goals, 8 shots, 3 shots on goal, 3 corners, 19 goalkeeper saves, 5 fouls and 6 free kicks.
The Lady Spartans continue in dominating fashion having outscored their opponents 57-2 this season, with a per game average total shots on goal of 30 to 6, and per game average total shots of 47 to 9.

McConnellsburg Overwhelms Southern Huntington County

McConnellsburg 12, Southern Huntington County 0. The Lady Spartans soundly defeated the Southern Huntington County Lady Rockets in nonconference play on September 22, extending their winning streak to seven games and recording their sixth shutout of the season and third in a row.
McConnellsburg opened the scoring shortly after the third minute when Marin DeShong converted a pass from Kya Washabaugh. Tenley Hendershot added the second goal in the fifth minute off an assist from Gemma Gordon. In the 17th minute, Laynee Hendershot scored unassisted from 15 yards. One minute later, DeShong scored unassisted from 5 yards after a defensive deflection. Braylin Gelvin made it 5-0 in the 23rd minute, finishing a rebound after the goalkeeper mishandled Gordon’s shot following a corner kick by Sydney Buterbaugh. An own goal in the 25th minute produced the sixth score. A minute later, Izzy Emrick scored off an assist from DeShong. With 12 minutes remaining, Gordon scored on an assist from Claire Bloomer, then added another goal one minute later at the goal line following a deflection by Baylee Maloff. The Spartans led 9-0 at halftime.
Four minutes into the second half, DeShong scored McConnellsburg’s 10th goal. Buterbaugh added the 11th in the 15th minute. Five minutes later, Washabaugh scored the Spartans’ final goal off an assist from Molly McKelvey. McConnellsburg held the Rockets to three shots while applying constant pressure, posting game- and season-high totals of 55 shots on goal and 94 shots overall.
