McConnellsburg Shuts Out Rockwood

McConnellsburg 6, Rockwood 0. The Lady Spartans hosted Rockwood on September 3 in Inter-County Conference play, controlling both ends of the field for their third straight win and third consecutive shutout.

McConnellsburg scored twice in the first half, with Gemma Gordon and Tenley Hendershot each recording a goal. Gordon and Marin DeShong added assists. The Spartans finished the half with 18 shots, 18 shots on goal and two keeper saves, while holding Rockwood to two shots on goal and no other attempts. Rockwood’s keeper made 16 first half saves.

Hendershot opened the scoring in the 29th minute off a Gordon assist, and Gordon scored one minute later from DeShong.

The Spartans added four second half goals, including two from DeShong and one each from Kya Washabaugh and Laynee Hendershot. Sydney Buterbaugh added an assist. McConnellsburg posted 18 shots and 19 shots on goal after halftime without needing a keeper save, while Rockwood was limited to one shot and no shots on goal. Rockwood’s keeper made 15 second half saves.

Washabaugh made it 3-0 eight minutes into the second half off a Buterbaugh assist. DeShong scored unassisted in the 21st minute. Hendershot followed six minutes later, and DeShong added the final goal with seven minutes remaining.

DeShong led McConnellsburg with two goals, nine shots and 12 shots on goal. Through three games, the Spartans have outscored opponents 28-0 while averaging 9.3 goals per game.

GIRLS SOCCER

McConnellsburg 13, North Star 0. The Lady Spartans traveled to face the North Star Lady Cougars in an Inter-County Conference league matchup on September 1 and controlled play from the start, earning their second straight victory and fifth consecutive win over NS since 2024.

The Spartans scored nine unanswered goals in the first half and added four more after halftime, with goals from Gemma Gordon (6), Kya Washabaugh (3), Braylin Gelvin, Sydney Buterbaugh, Izzy Emrick, and Molly McKelvy.

Next, the Spartans (2-0, 2-0 ICC-S) host the Rockwood Lady Rockets in a league contest on September 3.
