McConnellsburg Overwhelms Southern Fulton in Season Opener

McConnellsburg 8, Southern Fulton 2: On August 28th, the Spartans visited county rival Southern Fulton for an Inter-County Conference (ICC) league matchup and controlled play from the start, earning a season-opening win.
The Spartans dominated the first half, scoring six unanswered goals from Hoyt Glenn (3), Callen Mellott (2), and Lincoln McKelvy. Grady Shives, Mellott, and McKelvy combined for five assists. McConnellsburg took eight shots, put seven on goal, and recorded two keeper saves. Glenn opened the scoring off a Shives assist, then added a header from Mellott’s corner kick. Mellott later set up McKelvy for the third goal, and a Glenn-to-Shives-to-Mellott combination made it 4-0. Mellott scored unassisted for the fifth goal before Glenn finished the half with his third, assisted by McKelvy.
Seven minutes into the second half, Southern Fulton scored on a 20-yard shot that slipped past goalkeeper Cole Fletcher. Glenn responded a minute later, skillfully working through several defenders for an unassisted close-range goal. Four minutes later, Mellott found Ethan Lang for the Spartans’ final score, extending the lead to 8-1. Southern Fulton added its second goal on a penalty kick after Maxx Gelvin was called for a trip in the box. The Spartan bench gained valuable playing time, building teamwork, communication, and cooperation. Freshman Liam Pistner later earned his first varsity penalty-kick opportunity after a Southern Fulton foul in the box, but the keeper made the save. In the second half, McConnellsburg scored twice, had one assist, took nine shots with two on goal, and recorded two keeper saves.

McConnellsburg 9, Southern Fulton 0. On August 28th, the Lady Spartans visited county rival Southern Fulton Lady Indians for an Inter-County Conference (ICC) league matchup and controlled play from the start, earning a season-opening win.
The Spartans scored four unanswered first-half goals, led by Gemma Gordon with two, Marin DeShong with one, and an own goal, while DeShong added an assist. McConnellsburg recorded six shots, 11 shots on goal (SOG), and four keeper saves. The scoring began in the fourth minute when Molly McKelvey’s corner led to a ball handled mid-body by Gordon before it deflected between two Indian players for an own goal. Two minutes later, Gordon drove down the left side and took a shot that the Southern Fulton goalkeeper mishandled, allowing DeShong to score on the rebound for a 2-0 lead. Gordon added an unassisted goal in the 18th minute, then scored again one minute later off a DeShong assist.
The Spartans added five unanswered goals in the second half, with Gordon and DeShong scoring twice each and Lela Revercomb adding one. DeShong recorded three assists, and Molly McKelvey added one. McConnellsburg also took eight shots, put seven on goal, and made three keeper saves. DeShong scored unassisted in the 15th minute for the fifth goal, and Gordon followed in the 24th minute off a DeShong assist. Three minutes later, Gordon and DeShong connected again for the seventh goal. DeShong then scored the eighth goal two minutes later off a McKelvey corner kick, before Revercomb closed the scoring with an assist from DeShong.

McConnellsburg 10, North Star 4: The Spartans traveled to North Star on August 31 for a non-league matchup and earned their second straight win of the season.
McConnellsburg built a 6-2 lead in the first half and matched North Star’s two second-half goals with four of its own. Spartan scorers were Lincoln McKelvy with four goals, Hoyt Glenn with three, Ethan Lang with two, and Callen Mellott with one.
The Spartans (2-0, 1-0 ICC-E) will host the Rockwood Rockets (1-0) in a non-league contest on September 2 at 6 p.m.
