Big first inning carries Greencastle 11-12 over Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG-Greencastle 11/12 International All Stars erupted for twelve runs in the first inning enroute to a 21-2 win over Shippensburg Wednesday night at Doc Norcross Stadium. In a game shortened to three innings by the 15-run rule.

Greencastle sent fifteen batters to the plate in the top of the first inning,

Noah Sleighter got Greencastle on the board with a two-run double to put Greencastle up 2-0. Two hit batters, three walks, and an error stretched Greencastle’s lead to 8-0. Nash Mann followed with a double, scoring two more runs, and an error allowed two more to score, pushing the lead to 12-0.

Greencastle added nine more runs in the top of the third on run-producing singles from Jake Tracey, Kale Strait, Noah Sleighter, and Issac Snodderly, a Finn Sholes RBI double, a 3-run double from Blaine Lowery, and a fielder’s choice.

Shippensburg got on the board in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Evan Veney and scored a second run on Veney’s steal of home.

Greencastle had 10 hits on the night, led by Sleighter with two hits. Mann. Lowery and  Sleighter each had three RBI.

Nash Mann picked up the win for Greencastle, allowing three hits and two runs over three innings, no walks and three strikeouts.

Greencastle is now 2-0 in pool play and will play Pen Mar on Wednesday, July 1. Shippensburg falls to 1-1 and will play Bermudian Springs on Tuesday, June 30.

Greencastle’s 10U team was on the wrong end of a big first inning as Newville took an 11-0 lead in the top of the first. Greencastle battled back with a run in the bottom of the first and five more in the second, but fell to Newville 12-6.

In the Carlisle 12U pool, another big inning was the difference as Carlisle, trailing Newville 7-5 in the top of the sixth, exploded for 14 runs to win 19-7. The top two seeds in the Shippensburg and Carlisle pools will play for the District 14 Championship July 5-9.
