Greencastle-Antrim 9, Shippensburg 2: The Blue Devils built a 6-0 lead after 3 innings and used that to defeat the Greyhounds in a Mid Penn Colonial game on the road Thursday afternoon.
“We played pretty well today, but left a little too much on the bone offensively when we had chances to score a couple more,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said. “Jaxon Bostick and Cam Rakaczewski did great on the mound controlling the game, and we played solid defense.”
Bostick (3-0) pitched the first 5.1 innings to get the win for the unbeaten Blue Devils (11-0, 8-0 MPC). He allowed 4 hits, 4 walks and 2 runs, while striking out 6. Rakaczewski threw 1.2 innings with 1 hit and 3 K’s.
On offense, the Blue Devils rapped out 14 hits and spread the success around, with each of the first 6 batters in the order producing 2 hits each Rakaczewski and Avery Horst each had 2 hits and 2 runs batted in, while Andrew Weaver, Nolan Sullivan, Manny Brookens and Bo Brookens all had 2 hits.
For Shippensburg (3-9, 2-6 MPC), starter Brayden Ochs took the loss, while Mason Watson was 2-for-3.
SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 10, Shippensburg 0: Katie Zawilinski allowed only 1 hit in a 6-inning complete game to lead the Blue Devils over the Greyhounds in a Mid Penn Colonial contest Thursday afternoon at G-A.
Zawilinski gave up a single to Ship’s Alexis Kitner in the first inning after an error to put runners on first and second. But Zawilinski worked out of it and coasted from there. She walked one and struck out two.
“Katie has stepped up in the last two games,” Greencastle coach Mark DeCarli said. “She did her job — she moved the ball around very well and puts a good spin on the ball.”
The Blue Devils were held to just 1 run through 3 innings by Kalia Soverns, but scored twice in the fourth, four times in the fifth and got three runs in the sixth to end it.
Erika Hoover was 4-for-4 at the plate for Greencastle (9-2, 6-2 MPC), but Kylie Kerns put on a power show with two home runs and 3 RBIs. Allison Logsdon and Paiton Gordon each had 2 hits, with Gordon accounting for 3 runs batted in and Logsdon 2.
DeCarli said, “Our hitting is starting to get hot lately. Kylie has ben on fire and it’s nice to have Paiton back in that leadoff spot. We’ve got everybody back now and they’re playing in the positions they’re supposed to play. We have the pieces we were missing, so I hope we can keep playing well.”
Shippensburg (8-4, 6-3 MPC), had beaten G-A 5-1 earlier this season.
