Big Spring 8, Chambersburg 2: Brylee Stum handcuffed a red-hot Trojan offense on Monday afternoon and the Bulldogs defeated Chambersburg in a non-league game at Norlo Park.
Chambersburg (7-2) had won 6 straight games and scored in double figures for the last 4. But Stum allowed only 3 hits, no earned runs and 3 walks, while striking out 4.
“We struggled with all of that today … just one of those days, after being on a nice run.”
The Trojans went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Erissa Varner led off with a walk, moved up on a pair of wild pitches and scored on an error. They didn’t score again until the seventh, when a single by Hensley Brookens, a fielder’s choice and an error plated a run.
Skultety said, “They wanted it a little more than us today after we 10-run ruled them last year. It happens. Teams are always going to bring their best against us and we have to match the intensity. We will learn from it and I expect us to be much better tomorrow.”
Big Spring (9-1), ranked No. 3 in District 3 Class 4A, scored 4 runs in the top of the third when Kennedy Klein singled in a run and Alyson Darhower followed with a 3-run home run off Issie Slimmer.
The Bulldogs tallied 4 more runs in the top of the seventh off Sanay Jones, with 2 of them unearned. Big Spring totaled 8 hits in the game.
“Nothing changed today — we are still in first place (in the Commonwealth) and everything is in front of us.”
BOYS TENNIS
Boiling Springs 3, Chambersburg 2: The Trojans failed to win at any of the singles matches and fell to the Bubblers on Monday afternoon at Norlo Park in a non-league contest.
Eli Keeler at No. 2 singles, and No. 3 Micah Detweiler were defeated 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-2, respectively. Anton Winter at No. 1, made Boiling Springs’ Landon Lubart work a little harder at No. 1 in a 7-5, 6-1 defeat.
The No. 1 doubles team of Orrin Neff and Caden Brenize rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 verdict, followed by a 6-2, 6-0 win for the team of Nate Weis and Seth Walter at No. 2.
The Trojans (4-7) were back to full strength for the match.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Cumberland Valley 13, Chambersburg 9: The Trojans gave the unbeaten Eagles all they wanted in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game in New Kingstown on Monday evening.
The teams were tied after one quarter and Chambersbug (5-4, 5-4 MPC) trailed by 2 at halftime and by 3 after the third to CV (9-0).
“We showed up and really played well,” Trojan coach Shane Henry said. “CV is a great team and coached very well. Once again, it was a total team effort. We’re about the midway point of the season and we are continuing to trust each other and work as a complete unit.”
Reagan Barrett ripped in 5 goals and added an assist, while Brynn Sekel had 3 goals, an assist and 3 draw controls and Adele Henry scored a goal and had 2 groundballs.
Coach Henry said, “Reagan had another monster game, but our defense held down their offense. Sophia (Perrera) had a great defensive game with 3 caused turnovers and 3 groundballs. Mollie (Yardley-Gontz) and Brooke (Mickey) stood out on defense, and that’s why we were able to hang with a top District 3 team.
“On offense, Kaitlyn Brady was a force in the draw circle, pulling down 6 draws. And (goalie) Reece (Heverley, 15 saves), may have played her best game all season.”
BOYS LACROSSE
Cumberland Valley 20, Chambersburg 7: The 8-1 Eagles took a Mid Penn Commonwealth win over the Trojans on Monday night at Trojan Stadium.
“We played tough for the first three quarters, and were down 13-6,” Chambersburg coach Joe Wilmot said. “We ran out of gas in the fourth, but played hard until then.
“Eli Herbert played a great game and led us in groundballs and caused turnovers. Everett Wetherald showed a lot of toughness stepping up for his first start as goalie, even though he had shorst notice and was still recovering from being sick. Tavian (Ferguson) made some nice contributions on offense.”
For the Trojans (5-5, 4-5 MPC), Ryan Cosey scored 4 goals and had an assist, Ferguson had 2 goals and an assist and Parker Watkins scored once.
