Greencastle-Antrim 17, James Buchanan 2: The Blue Devils were itching to finally have their season opener and they took it out on the Rockets at Mercersburg in a Mid Penn Colonial game that lasted for 3 innings.
It was tied 2-2 after one inning, but G-A scored 4 runs in the second and 11 in the thop of the hird inning.
“We had some shaky defense in the first inning, but I was pleased with how we responded,” Greencastle coach Eric Shaner said. “We stuck to the script and got four runs back in the second. I liked that we did not give away at-bats today.”
Avery Horst gave up a pair of unearned runs in the first, but got the win. He gave up 1 hit and 2 walks in his 3 innings, while striking out 4.
The Blue Devils’ 12-hit attack was led by Andrew Weaver, who was 3-for-3 including a double to lead off the game, and scored 4 runs. Nolan Sullivan was 2-for-2, scored 3 runs, belted a home run and produced 4 runs batted in.
Bo Brookens belted a bases-loaded double for 3 RBIs in the third inning, Bryce Davidson was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and RBIs, Jaxon Bostick hit a run-scoring double, Manny Brookens had 2 runs knocked in and Horst brought in one.
SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 10, James Buchanan 0: Kiersten Swain fired a 1-hit, 5-inning shutout and Kylie Kerns and Brooklyn Sanchez supplied the power as the Blue Devils defeated the Rockets in a Mid Penn Colonial game at G-A on Wednesday afternoon.
Swain handcuffed JB, allowing only a hit to Emileigh Linn in the top of the fourth inning, striking out 7 and walking 2. Of her 62 pitches, 40 were for strikes.
Sanchez, playing against her former team, was 3-for-3, including a home run and a double, and Kerns piled up the same numbers. The only difference was that Sanchez drove in 4 runs and Kerns had 2 RBIs.
Minnie Gambacurta had 2 hits in 3 trips for Greencastle (2-0, 1-0 MPC). The Devils scored 3 runs in the second and fourth innings, and 2 runs in the fifth ended the game via the 10-run rule.
