Game-busting run carries Trojans over CV, 51-33

CHAMBERSBURG — For the first 12 minutes of the game, the defenses of Cumberland Valley and Chambersburg ruled the court.

The first points took over 4 minutes to go up on the board, neither team was shooting well and it looked like a tug-of-war was on the way.

But the Trojans produced a crushing run of 18 consecutive points that bridged the second and third quarters, bouncing to a 29-13 lead over the Eagles, and went on to capture a 51-33 win in a District 3 Class 6A first-round boys basketball game at CASHS Field House on Tuesday night.

“We played a good defensive game, and it helps that we know them so well,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “We know how they do things, and we prepared really well. (Assistant coach) Evan (Shreffler) did a good job scouting and our Blue Team ran their offense well.”

The win pushes the Trojans (17-6) into Friday’s quarterfinals against No. 2 seed Central York (20-2), which defeated Harrisburg 83-74 last night, at 7 p.m. Chambersburg has also qualified for the PIAA State Tournament (the top 8 teams in District 3 advance).

In a choppy start for both offenses, CV (15-8) managed a lead of 9-5 after one quarter and still held a 13-11 advantage with about 3 minutes left in the half, despite threes by Grayson Kegerreis and Colton Cornwell.

Then Chambersburg scored 7 straight on a 3-pointer by Angelo Onomastico, and layups by Malachi Duhaney and Josh Rudy — with Cornwell and Landon Buhrman getting assists — to give the Trojans an 18-13 lead at halftime.

“I was concerned with Colton picking up his third foul before the half,” Shreffler said, “but we finished that quarter well.”

To start the third period, Buhrman made a pair of free throws, then Cornwell made two consecutive rebound baskets and added a 3-pointer, and Buhrman finished off the run with a reverse layup in traffic for a 29-13 lead.

In the meantime, the Chambersburg defense was holding the Eagles scoreless. Duhaney had two of his four blocks in the quarter, including a two-handed stuff, and he, Cornwell and Buhrman were active on the boards.

Through three quarters, CV had made only 7 of 30 shots (23%).

The Eagles crept to within 8 at 34-26 on a 3-pointer by Elijah Welsh early in the fourth, but baskets by Duhaney and Buhrman, then back-to-back stickbacks by Cornwell and Buhrman closed the door.

Duhaney ended up with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, plus his 4 blocks.

“Malachi had a huge game,” Shreffler said. “I expected rebounding to a huge factor in the game. We had to match their toughness and I thought we dominated in the second half. That helped us keep them from making any runs.”

“We stress rebounding every day in practice, and it was physical,” Duhaney said. “I knew I had to get in the right mode.”

Cornwell collected 15 points, 5 boards and 4 assists, Buhrman had 5 rebounds and 8 points and Kegerreis added 7 points. For CV, Welsh led with 13 points.

Shreffler said, “We had a great crowd. We appreciate everybody showing up and making some noise. It was a great atmosphere.”
