GETTYSBURG — The Chambersburg girls wrestling team produced a good enough record to qualify as the No. 11 seed for the inaugural District 3 Team Championships.
But the Trojans’ dual meet season ended in the first round on Wednesday evening when Chambersburg was defeated 47-29 by unbeaten No. 6 seed Upper Dauphin in a match held at Gettysburg.
The Trojans finish with a 20-6 duals record and the individual postseason begins Feb. 13 with sectionals at Mechanicsburg.
“Not the result we wanted or expected, but we wrestled tough against a really tough Upper Dauphin team,” Chambersburg coach Josh Sherman said. “You don’t know what to expect when you wrestle teams you don’t see every day, but credit the Upper Dauphin girls, who came out swinging.
“Our young wrestlers took some lumps early, but battled back in the middle of the lineup. In the end, UD just landed a few more shots.”
Upper Dauphin won 4 of the first 5 bouts, all by pin, to take a 24-6 lead. The only Trojan points in that run came from Jessica Li, with a pin at 106 pounds.
At 130, Piper Jones took a 12-0 lead before pinning her opponent, and Reagan Evans made it 24-17 with a 15-0 technical fall at 136.
At 148, Hadyn Fritz earned a wild win. She trailed UD’s Kristen Rosado 13-8 after a free-scoring first period. In the second, Fritz notched a takedown that put Rosado on her back and Fritz posted the pin.
Aulana Stanton scored the other Chambersburg win with a forfeit at 170.
At 190, the Trojans’ Makenna Lowe held a 7-6 lead over Lydia Engle after one back-and-forth period. IN the second, Lowe started down, but reversed for a 9-6 lead. But Engle came up a reversal of her own and caught Lowe on her back for a fall.
Sherman said, “(Assistant) coach (Joey) Finkey and I are super proud of these young ladies and we get all but one back next year, so the future is certainly bright. Now, it’s on to the individual part of the season.”
Upper Dauphin (8-1) faced No. 2 seed Gettysburg (16-1) in the quarterfinals later Wednesday and was defeated 41-30.
