BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 58, Central Dauphin East 55: Despite a slew of turnovers and lots of foul trouble, the Trojans held off the Panthers to win a big Mid Penn Commonwealth game Thursday night in Harrisburg.

Angelo Onomastico

East never led in the contest until it went ahead 53-52 on a layup by Jason Kinard with 1:38 left. Grayson Kegerreis then drove the lane to score and completed a three-point play for a 55-53 lead. CD East tied it on two free throws by Amryn Chase.

Colton Cornwell then sank 3 of 4 free throws over the next 42 seconds, including 1-for-2 to make it 58-55 with 22 seconds left. The Panthers missed a pair of 3-pointers in their last 2 possessions.

“I was extremely proud of the mental toughness our guys showed,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “Even through we had a ton of foul trouble and some really bad turnovers, multiple guys came off the bench and contributed valuable minutes.”

The Trojans (13-5, 9-4 MPC) knocked down seven 3-pointers in the first half, including one on three consecutive trips down the floor by Angelo Onomastico, to take control early. Late in the third, CDE missed three times on offensive rebounds and Chambersburg made them pay with a fast break by Onomastico and a Cornwell rebound bucket to open up an 11-point lead.

In the fourth, Cornwell made 4 foul shots for a 44-37 lead, but East scored three straight baskets after Trojan turnovers. A pair of layups by Josh Rudy and a rebound score by Landon Buhrman helped them keep the lead until late.

“When the momentum of the game started to change in East’s favor, guys stuck together and made enough winning plays to get the job done,” Shreffler said. “It was the gutsiest win of our season by far.”

Cornwell led the scoring with 17 points, but three more players hit double figures — Kegerreis with 13, Onomastico with 11 and Rudy with a season-high 11. Alijah Cooper scored 21 points for the Panthers (9-9, 6-6 MPC).

GIRLS WRESTLING
Chambersburg 54, South Western 23: The Trojans ran off 8 consecutive victories from 124 pounds to 190 to swamp the Mustangs in a non-league match Thursday evening in Hanover.

Alba Rojas

Emily Shaffner opened the match with a pin at 100 for Chambersburg (14-5), then South Western (10-9) won 3 straight to take a 17-6 lead.

But the Trojans were awarded 5 forfeit wins, plus notching pins by Reagan Evans (136), Alba Rojas (142) and Daryn Glasgow (155) to score 48 consecutive points.

“It was another good result for the team,” Chambersburg coach Josh Sherman said. “Rojas continued her recent run of success. Alba is really starting to become a consistent figure in the middle of our lineup.

“The bout at 106 was a good match of quality wrestlers (Chambersburg’s Jessica Li vs. Claire Gobrecht). Jess was a state qualifier last year and Gobrecht placed fourth. The two were competing pretty hard when Gobrecht was able to catch Jess late in the second (for a pin in 2:49).”

BOYS SWIMMING
Chambersburg 108, Red Land 70: The Trojans picked up first place in 10 of the 12 events Thursday afternoon and captured a non-league win over the Patriots in Etters.

Isaac Stepan

“This was a good win for us and was our last yard-pool tuneup before Mid Penns,” Chambersburg coach Chad White said. “It was fun to mix up the relays and go for some close, competitive races.”

Three Trojans captured 3 wins each — Colby Evans won the 200 freestyle in 2:02.40 and the 100 free in 55.45; Ethan White was victorious in the 200 IM in 2:14.68 and the 500 free in 4:53.42; and Alex Kaczmark won the 100 fly in 51.74 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.21.

The other winners for Chambersburg (11-1) were Nolan Diehl in diving (224.90 points) and Luke Ritchie in the 100 backstroke (58.83). Two relays also touched first — the 200 free team of Kaczmark, Isaac Stepan, Kruz Swope and Xavier Covington (1:38.47) and the 400 free team of Levi Uglow, White, Evans and Ritchie (3:44.33).

Coach White said, “Ethan had a nice season drop that should get him into the final heat for Mid Penns, and Levi dropped some time in the 200 free to help his chances of qualifying.”

GIRLS SWIMMING
Chambersburg 111, Red Land 67: The Trojans earned their fourth straight victory on Thursday afternoon in Etters by handing the Patriots a non-league loss.

Melani David

Chambersburg coach Abbie Reichelderfer said, “I love how much passion these girls are giving. They are all trying so hard to improve, especially this late in the season. Everyone is training so hard right now and soon they will all be rested for the postseason.”

Ava Grove and Calla Hoffman were the top point scorers for the Trojans (5-7). Grove won the 200 IM in 2:27.15 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.35, while Hoffman took the 200 freestyle in 2:06.61 and the 100 backstroke in 1:01.24.

Both girls were on the winning 200 medley relay team (with Audrey Keller and Addie Zimmerman, 2:01.68) and the 400 free relay team (with Brooke Reichelderfer and Keller, 4:07.41).

The 200 free relay also picked up a win with a time of 1:57.10. That team included Reichelderfer, Graciana Clark, Zimmerman and Melani David.

Coach Reichelderfer said, “Graciana really hammered down today and swam amazing in all of her events and had a PR in the 50 free.”

Other PRs included Sarah Foster (200 free), Jade Uglow (50 free and the relay) and Ashton Lucas (500 free).
