Trojan wrestlers rally to defeat Cedar Cliff, 38-33

CHAMBERSBURG — Cedar Cliff coach Rick Tamanoski made the last of a bunch of lineup switches at 215 pounds, hoping it was enough to hold off Chambersburg.

Deakon Snavely

He had just sacrificed a pin to the Trojans’ Jaccob Stoner at 189 pounds and moved Will White up to 215. With the Colts ahead 33-29 and Chambersburg heavily favored at 285, the team that won at 215 would be the winner.

Facing White (12-8) was Trojan freshman Deakon Snavely (15-9), who came through with a thrilling 2-1 win in Chambersburg’s 38-33 Mid Penn Commonwealth victory in the CASHS Aux Gym on Thursday night.

“That was smart to move White up — it was the only chance they had,” Trojan coach Craig Hight said. “But Deakon wrestled a really good match. I just told him to keep moving his hands and feet.”

After a scoreless first period, White went up 1-0 with a quick escape and it was 1-0 after two periods without many shots being taken. In the third, Snavely stood up and got free, quickly gaining the top position. He was awarded an escape and takedown for a 4-1 lead.

But the official changed his ruling after they went out of bounds, giving Snavely only a reversal and a 2-1 lead with 1:22 left.

He was able to hold White down with several good mat returns and stopped his movement off the whistle by grabbing an ankle to help break him down. That resulted in a 2-1 victory.

Snavely said, “I was able to get on his ankle. The first time, I didn’t see he was putting it there and he got out, but I was expecting it after that. It feels really good to be wrestling on this team as a freshman, and it was nice to be able to do that for the team.”

“As a freshman, the top position is usually a place that needs some work,” Hight said. “So I was really glad to see Deakon put on a good ride there.”

The Colts still held a 33-32 lead, but that lasted only 1:51 when Frank Barrientos decked John Eisenhower to wrap up the victory for Chambersburg (4-2, 2-2 MPC).

Barrientos said, “I was holding back a little at first — he was pretty strong. But a heavyweight’s got to do what heavyweights do. It was a nice team win and I’m all about that.”

The Trojans ripped out to a 23-6 lead on a forfeit to Demetry Morrow at 107, pins by Cody Seabolt (121) and Isaac Brambley (127) on a nice tilt, and a 17-2 technical fall by Ethan Paszkowski (133).

The Colts (1-4, 1-3 MPC) than ran off 27 consecutive points on pins by Kavin Muyleart, Aiden Herndon, Josh Weaver and Jackson Wentz, and a wild 11-7 decision at 152 by Stellan Bachman over Justin Deneen.

Deneen led 7-3 early in the third period, but Bachman escaped, took him down to tie the bout, and added a 4-point nearfall when he caught Deneen turning the wrong way.

Hight said, “I knew it’d be close with (Isaiah) Tasker out of the lineup (at 172) — that’s a big swing of points. We asked some guys to move up a weight to cover everything.”
