Trojan wrestlers score 9 pins in 54-19 rout of CV

CHAMBERSBURG — Chambersburg’s wrestling team needed to put a blowout loss to Gettysburg last week in its rear view mirror.

Consider that task accomplished.

Gabe Nolan

The Trojans opened a Mid Penn Commonwealth match against Cumberland Valley at CASHS Field House on Wednesday night with 5 straight pins and a 30-0 lead and finished off the Eagles, 54-19.

Chambersburg scored all of its points on 9 pins.

“We definitely showed some aggression tonight — we showed we were ready to grow,” Trojan coach Craig Hight said. “The Gettysburg match (a 53-13 loss) was an eye-opener for a lot of our young guys, but they got after it tonight.”

Chambersburg (2-1, 1-1 MPC) roared out of the gate with quick pins by Hunter Johnson at 107 (1:00), Aiden Yarnell at 114 (0:36), Cody Seabolt at 121 (1:55), Isaac Brambley at 127 (2:39) and Gabe Nolan at 133 (0:12).

Nolan had missed the first two meets of the season, but didn’t waste any time putting Van Sablan to his back off the takedown and getting the lightning-quick fall.

After a technical fall by CV’s AJ Cobbs at 139, the Trojans’ Justin Deneen took an 11-0 lead before pinning his Eagle opponent at 145 and raise the score to 36-5.

Hight said, “CV is a little down this year and they were missing one of their best kids (Logan Maurer), so I was expecting us to win them all through 145.”

The Eagles (0-3, 0-3 MPC) closed the gap with three consecutive wins — a tech fall for Andrew Alderman at 152, a pin by Dom Vogel at 160 and a decision by Gabe Seagreaves at 172, and still had a mathematical chance trailing by 36-19 with 3 bouts left.

But Jaccob Stoner clinched the victory for Chambersburg at 189 with a pin, followed by pins by Deakon Snavely at 215 and Frank Barrientos at 285.

“It was nice to see Snavely come out with a win — he wrestled two tough kids before tonight,” Hight said. “Everybody, even the ones who lost, were able to get something positive tonight.

“And, anytime you can beat the teams in red (CV) or green (Central Dauphin), it’s a good night.”
