Chbg. roundup: Trojan boys use balanced scoring to defeat Cougars

BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 80, Harrisburg 63: The Trojans used a fast-breaking offense, balanced scoring and a tough defense in the second half to take down the Cougars in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game on the road Wednesday night.

Chambersburg has now won 17 of the last 18 games against Harrisburg.

“I was extremely pleased with out balanced effort offensively, and the toughness we showed, both mentally and physically, especially in the second  half,” Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said. “The guys did a great job sharing the basketball, which helped us beat their pressure and led to lots of great looks.”

The teams combined for 17 3-point shots, with Chambersburg hitting 7 of its 9 in the first half.

Malachi Duhaney led the attack for the Trojans (3-0, 1-0 MPC) with 17 points, but Angelo Onomastico, Colton Cornwell and Landon Buhrman each totaled 15 points and Grayson Kegerreis added 10.

For the Cougars (0-1, 0-1 MPC), Jaylen Lewis scored 20 points. Harrisburg was within 7 points to start the fourth quarter, but Buhrman swished a turnaround jumper in the lane and Onomastico and Duhaney hit consecutive 3’s for a 65-50 lead.

Shreffler said, “Harrisburg has a lot of scoring options, which makes them very difficult to match up with. We played a lot of zone in the first half, but primarily played man in the second half, and I thought we were much better in the second half.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Harrisburg 52, Chambersburg 40: The Trojans got off a slow start and could not recover, falling in a Mid Penn Commonwealth home game to the Cougars on Wednesday night.

Harrisburg (2-3, 1-0 MPC) jumped out to a 13-3 lead after one quarter and led 25-10 by halftime.

Trojan coach Jamiur King said, “We again struggled to score in the first half, and free throws continue to be a thorn in our side.”

Chambersburg made only 12 of 27 free throws, but did hit 8 of 11 in the final quarter, after going 4-for-16 in the first 3 periods. The Cougars sank only 6 of 19 from the stripe.

Maddie Mills popped in 18 points for the Trojans (1-2, 0-1 MPC), Ayla Whiteley added 8 and Bella Noel chipped in 6.

King said, “I’m proud of the way we battled in the second half. Our goal continues to be that we need to be strong together for four good quarters.”

Ihyanna Griffen paced Harrisburg with 18 points.
