NEW KINGSTOWN — The Chambersburg swim team took on one of its toughest opponents in the season’s first meet, and Cumberland Valley emerged victorious in the boys and girls Mid Penn Commonwealth meets on Tuesday afternoon at CV.

The Trojan boys collected more first place finishes, but the Eagles used their depth to win 100-85. CV was dominant in the girls meet, taking a 154-32 victory.

Chambersburg was the winner in 8 of the boys’ 12 events, but in four of those events, CV placed 2-3.

Trojan coach Chad White said, “Although it wasn’t the result we were hoping for, the boys raced really well tonight. We won more than CV, but their depth was incredibly strong.”

Cullen McGraw and Ethan White each picked up two individual wins for Chambersburg, McGraw in the 500 freestyle (4:45.31) and 100 backstroke (54.24), while White was a winner in the 200 IM (2:00.57) and 100 breaststroke (1:01.78.

Amir Tasker captured the 200 freestyle in 1:43.68 and Cristian Pong was the 100 butterfly winner in 50.26.

Coach White said, “Our veteran swimmers put up some very quick times, and our newer swimmers got a taste of a high-pressure, but fun meet. I’m really excited all around with how we did tonight. We have a high-powered veteran group that puts us in contention in every meet, and we have some newcomers that are going to keep getting better.”

Chambersburg also placed first in two of the three relays. In the 200 medley, McGraw, White, Pong and Alex Kaczmark hit the wall in 1:37.82, and the 200 freestyle team of Kaczmark, Pong, White and Tasker finished first in 1:27.66.

The Trojan girls came up with one winner against a powerful Eagle squad. Calla Hoffman raced to a time of 1:00.58 to win the 100 backstroke.

Addie Zimmerman (diving) and Audrey Keller (100 fly) were runners-up in their events, as were two Chambersburg relays — the 200 medley, with Hoffman, Ava Grove, Keller and Zimmerman, and the 400 freestyle team of Keller, Brooke Reichelderfer, Zimmerman and Hoffman.

Chambersburg interim coach Abbie Reichelderfer said, “Today’s meet allowed us a chance to work out some kinks in our technique and learn where we need to improve and fine tune. We had a strong 100 freestyle — Melani David went 1:12.60, which is a personal best, and Graciana Clark was just off her best time. Their hard work in practice is really paying off.

“I’m super proud of how the girls supported each other for the whole meet. I think our girls should be really proud of how they performed in their first meet in an intense setting against a top caliber team in our conference.”
