DILLSBURG — The Chambersburg girls basketball team managed only five points in the first half, which proved to be too much despite a second-half comeback in its season opener Friday night.

Shippensburg held a 19-5 lead at halftime and ended up with a 46-39 victory over the Trojans in a first-round game of the Northern York Tip-Off Tournament.

Saturday, Chambersburg will face Hanover in the consolation game at 6:30 and the Greyhounds will play Northern, which won 66-28 over the Nighthawks, at 8.

Azula Navarro scored 8 of her 12 points in the first half for Ship. Brynley Henderson and Lilly Weller each tallied 9 points.

Trojan coach Jamiur King said, “We just could not score the ball in the first half. We played solid perimeter defense, or it could have been worse.”

In the third quarter, Chambersburg outscored Shippensburg 19-11 and at one point pulled to within 2 points, but the Lady Hounds were able to hold the lead from there.

Maddie Mills popped in 8 points in the third and she led the Trojans with 21 points, with five 3-pointers. Tori Price had a pair of 3s, and scored 8 total.

“That was one of our best third quarters in years,” King said. “But Shippensburg really battled us on the boards.”
