CHAMBERSBURG — In Chambersburg’s first season of girls wrestling last winter, the Trojans produced a fine record of 12-5, but two of those defeats were to county rival Waynesboro.
When those teams met Thursday night at CASHS Field House in the season opener, the Trojans exacted a measure of revenge by handing the Maidens a 54-23 defeat in a non-league meet.
Chambersburg did win 5 forfeit bouts, but still outscored ‘Boro, 24-23.
Waynesboro started quickly, getting a technical fall from Aubrey Rinebolt at 112 and pins at 118 and 124 by Keeley Pryor and Miley Smetzer to lead 17-0.
Trojan coach Josh Sherman said, “I was glad the girls at those three weights got to wrestle. They’re all first-year kids and they’ve shown a lot of promise in the room, but now they have the experience of a real match.”
Chambersburg got a boost at 136 when another first-year wrestler, Alejandro Cole Rosales, scored a pin in 4:50 over Lily Kahl. In a back-and-forth match, it was 9-6 in Kahl’s favor when Rosales took her down to her back and got the mat slap.
“She is our backup at 130, but we needed her to bump up,” Sherman said. “I was really happy with that result. She put it all together and it was like a blueprint for our young kids of how to take what you do in the room out to the mat.”
The Trojans’ other big win came at 148 when Hadyn Fritz caught Rylei Young in a headlock for a fall in 1:06. A year ago, Young had defeated Fritz twice.
Sherman said, “We only have two seniors, and Hadyn is the veteran. That was was good to see her take that win.”
Also for Chambersburg, Reagan Evans notched a fall in 31 seconds at 142 and Emily Shaffner had one in just 16 seconds at 100. Piper Jones (138), Makenna Lowe (170), Aulana Stanton (190), Lillybeth Alcantaras (235) and Jennifer Li (106) earned forfeits.
Waynesboro’s other winner was Annabelle Tracey at 155, who turned in the fastest pin of the night, in 15 seconds.
