GIRLS BASKETBALL
McConnellsburg 51, Shade 38. On Friday, November 28th, the Lady Spartans opened their season and hosted the Shade Lady Panthers in a non-conference game. The Spartans put defeated the Panthers with an 18-point fourth quarter run. The win marked Spartan coach Jeff Gelvin’s 300th career victory replete with post-game recognition and a game ball.
Shade led 10-7 after the first quarter. But the Spartans’ first possession in the second quarter tied it on a Janiah Lowery three-pointer. Moments after a fast break layup by Serenity Rengifo put the Spartans up by six to lead 20-14. The Panthers closed the gap late in the quarter to two, with the Spartans leading 20-18.
Starting the third quarter, without hesitation, the Spartans put up six unanswered and held that lead into the quarter’s end, 33-26. In the final quarter, the Spartans sealed the game with 18 points—three from beyond the arc.
