GIRLS SOCCER: McConnellsburg 5, Berlin Brothersvalley 0. On October 22nd, the McConnellsburg Lady Spartans, seeded #1, hosted the seeded #8 Berlin Brothersvalley Lady Mountaineers in the first round of PIAA District 5 Class A soccer playoffs. The Spartans performed a seasonal hat-trick of wins with this victory plus the two previous at home on September 18th winning 5-1 and away on October 4thwinning 2-0.
The ice-breaker goal came in the first half after 26 minutes. The play started in the backfield with Molly McKelvy’s pass to Serenity Rengifo, to Zoe Mellott, then to Marin DeShong, and finally to Gemma Gordon who launched a high arcing kick outside the 18 past the Berlin goalie’s reach.
In the second half, 11 minutes in Zoe Mellott received a pass from Gordon for the second goal. Six minutes later, Rengifo launched an unassisted kick from the outer 18 edge that arced perfectly in a parabolic trajectory to the back top corner of the net over the goalie’s outstretched hands to put the Spartans up by three goals to none. At six minutes remaining, on an offensive run, Claire Bloomer put the ball over a defender that brought the goalie out of the net and allowed Rengifo to beat her to the ball and tap it in for the fourth goal. The fifth and final goal came two minutes later when Gordon received a sideline pass, muscled close in, and turned the ball to the net past two defenders and the goalie.
Notable stats. Overall, qualitatively, the Spartans led in shots and shots on goal. The Spartans extend their season shutouts to 13 and win streak to 11 outscoring their opponents by an average of 5 goals. The team has won 12 games by three goals or more this season. They’ve won 13 of their last 14 contests and scored 66 goals over those.
