GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 3, Waynesboro 1: The Blue Devils had their first close regular season match Monday night, but still earned a victory over the Maidens in a road Mid Penn Colonial contest.
G-A (6-0, 5-0 MPC) won the first two games, 25-20 and 25-18. ‘Boro then took a 25-23 win — which was the first set dropped by Greencastle this year other than in a tournament. But the Blue Devils closed it out with a 25-23 win.
Greencastle coach Madee Goodwin said, “We had to be mentally tough with a great team like Waynesboro, who was going to make us work for every point. That was the first time going past three sets, so the girls needed to keep their energy high.”
Kylie Kerns was instrumental to the win for G-A: she had 12 kills, 11 service points, 3 aces, 23 digs and 38 assists.
Wren Roberts produced good numbers, too, with 16 kills on 27 attempts (.556 hitting %), 11 points and 12 digs.
Abby Eagler came up with 19 kills, 13 points, 4 aces and 15 digs. Also for Greencastle, Jordyn Wagner had 5 blocks, Hayleigh Lowe had 3 blocked shots and Hayden Baer had 8 points.
“I think it was important to continue to play with high energy and reduce the amount of runs their team went on,” Goodwin said.
FIELD HOCKEY
Greencastle-Antrim 5, Biglerville 0: Natalie Medina continued her strong scoring push with a second-straight hat trick and the Blue Devils trounced the Canners in a non-league game at Kaley Field on Monday afternoon.
“We had a rough first quarter, but we were able to refocus for the remainder of the game,” G-A coach Keara Allshouse said. “Caroline Barnes did a great job of helping distribute the ball with the other midfields and Acacia Long had many key defensive steals.”
Medina scored 3 of the goals for Greencastle (3-3), while Camryn Guthrie and Rowan Shubert also found the cage. Shubert produced 2 assists, while Guthrie and Serenity Goodman each had one. Goalie Rebecca Jones stopped 10 shots on her way to a shutout.
Allshouse said, “It is a true sign of a coachable team to reflect after a quarter and completely change the tone of play.”
