Area athletes earn 3 medals at PIAA track & field meet

SHIPPENSBURG — A total of 11 athletes from the area competed on the second day of the PIAA Track & Field Championships on Saturday and combined to bring home three medals.

— Shippensburg’s Derek Lynch ended up with a silver medal in the boys Class 3A discus.

— Blake Mallast of Chambersburg placed sixth in the boys 3A 200 dash.

— McConnellsburg’s Caleb Buterbaugh won an eighth-place medal in the boys 2A 300 hurdles.

Lynch’s best throw in the discus was 176-6, and it came on his fifth attempt of the day. The Greyhound senior finished behind only Dino Nadaravic of Gateway, who hit 180-2 on his first throw.

Ship teammate Ayden Foust, a junior, had a throw of 153-3 in the same event to place 13th.

Mallast ran a 22.13 in Friday’s prelims, which was the fifth-best time. In Saturday’s final, the senior lowered his time to 21.71, which was good enough for sixth.

Another Trojan senior had a good performance — Liam Kirkpatrick in the 3200. He posted a time of 9:24.25 to finish 12th in the race.

Also for Chambersburg, the boys 4 x 800 relay came in with the 21st-best time. The team of Kaden Rife, Aiden Alleman, Cole Lehman and Kirkpatrick finished in 8:16.16.

Buterbaugh qualified Friday for the 300 hurdles final in 2A with a 40.48. He bettered that time slightly on Saturday with a 40.39 to close out his senior season.

In 3A boys, Waynesboro’s Ben Williams competed in the javelin and his throw of 155-3 was good for 24th place.

Waynesboro’s Jaeda Dockman was entered in the girls 3A high jump. Her best height was 5-2, and the senior finished in a tie for 18th place.

In 2A girls, Southern Fulton freshman Julia Madison qualified in the 800 and ran a time of 2:22.80 ti finish in 14th place.
