The Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers earned convincing wins in the Mason Dixon Christian Conference girls soccer and baseball playoffs Monday.
SOCCER: CVCS 4, Broadfording 0: The top-seeded Blazers (9-1-1) advanced to the MDCC championship game by defeating Broadfording 4-0 in Monday’s semifinal matchup.
Addison Teal scored a pair of goals to lead the Blazers. Kaitlyn Garvin and Reagan Witmer each added a goal.
“We had a lot of shots in the first half but not good shots,” Blazers coach Tim Hott said. “We did much better in the second half by calming down and taking good shots. The team pushed themselves to play through whole game and earned their spot in the championship game on Thursday.”
The Blazers will face Calvary Christian, a 4-1 winner over Heritage Monday, in Thursday’s championship game at 7 p.m. at Greencastle-Antrim High School. The Blazers defeated Calvary at home and tied on the road during the regular season.
BASEBALL: CVCS 11, Calvary 3: The Blazers surrendered an early run but came back to defeat Calvary Christian 11-3 in the MDCC quarterfinals.
“We have not played well lately and it was nice to come out with a fast start,” Blazers coach Ed McBeth said.
Nathan Minnier jacked a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to put the Blazers ahead 4-1. The Eagles didn’t let Minnier do any more damage as they issued what is likely a CVCS school-record three intentional walks in his subsequent at-bats, including one leading off an inning.
Reece Witmer threw the first three innings to pick up the win. Micah Ramsey and Jensen Henninger each logged a pair of innings in relief.
Gage Brookens was 3-for-4 with a triple and three stolen bases.
The fourth-seeded Blazers (4-6-1) will play top-seeded Broadfording on Thursday at the Upton field in the semifinals. The Blazers split with Broadfording during the regular season, losing 10-3 in an away game and then winning 12-2 at home.
