CHAMBERSBURG — Trojan Stadium was once again the site of the Mid Penn Conference track & field championships and a better day of weather would have been hard to come by.

Liam Kirkpatrick

Franklin County athletes fared far better on the boys side, with three first-place efforts and four runner-up finishes. The best the girls could manage were a trio of third-place medals.

Chambersburg senior Liam Kirkpatrick won with relative ease in the boys 3200 race. His winning time of 9:32.28 was more than 6 seconds better than Shippensburg’s Rylan Asper, who was second in 9:39.91.

In the shot put, the Greyhounds’ Aydan Foust was seeded 7th with his best throw of 49-7. But Foust nailed a throw of 51-1 to take home a gold medal Saturday, winning by 8 inches.

The other champion was Noah Parks of Greencastle-Antrim, who took the 800 race in a time of 1:56.78. He outlasted Mifflin County’s Wyatt Kauffman (1:57.28).

Chambersburg, which finished fifth in the boys team standings, had two runner-up places. Blake Mallast, who was fourth in the 100, placed second in the 200 with a time of 21.58, trailing only Central Dauphin’s Gabroel Scott (21.31).

The other was Jon Dawe in the 300 hurdles. His time of 39.87 was well behind heavily-favored Tyler Burgess of Palmyra, but was the only other runner to break 40.0.

Along with Asper, Shippensburg had one other second-place finish. Derek Lynch had a fine throw of 176-8, but it trailed Nathan Haas of State College (177-2).

A total of three area girls competitors finished third in their event. Chambersburg’s Alaina Morris cleared 11-0 in the pole vault to finish a foot behind the winner.

In the jumping events, Greencastle’s Jaylynn Schmuck was third in the triple jump with an effort of 36-9, and she was also fourth in the long jump at 16-7.75.

Also, Allessandra Luffy of Ship turned in a throw of 120-0 to place third in the discus.

The District 3 Championships will be held next Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University, followed by the PIAA Championships the following weekend.
