BASEBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 4, West Perry 3: The Blue Devils’ patience at the plate helped fuel a 3-run rally in the bottom of the 8th inning Wednesday as they pulled out a Mid Penn Colonial victory over the Mustangs in a home game.
Carter McCauley led off the 8th with a walk, and Nolan Sullivan followed with a single — the only hit of the frame. Elvin Robles was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then Landon Myers worked a walk to pull G-A to within 3-2. JD Flynn then faced an 0-2 count, but fouled off a pitch before taking four balls for another RBI and a tie game. Robles then raced home on a wild pitch to win the game.
“We sure don’t like to make things easy,” Greencastle coach Eric Shaner said. “But we don’t quit, either. I was glad we could get Carter the win he deserved — he was a stud out there.”
McCauley went all 8 innings, allowing 5 hits, no walks and 2 earned runs while striking out 10. On his 101st pitch in the top of the eighth, after West Perry had scored twice, the Mustangs (10-7) missed a squeeze bunt attempt with two strikes for the second out and the Blue Devils (8-8, 7-6 MPC) caught a baserunner in a rundown for the final out.
Shaner said, “McCauley was cruising into the seventh when he hit a batter with two outs and one of our outfielders let one get over his head for the tying run.”
G-A’s first run came in the first inning when Andrew Weaver walked, stole second and scored on a hit by Sullivan.
