SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 10, Northern York 3: The Blue Devils kept their Mid Penn Colonial Division title hopes humming along Thursday afternoon by taking care of the Polar Bears in a home game.

Greencastle (15-1, 12-0 MPC) can wrap up the title on Monday when it plays at Big Spring. The Bulldogs’ only division loss is to G-A earlier this year (5-2).

“We’ve got all three phases rolling right now,” G-A coach Mark DeCarli said. “We’ve been pounding the ball all year. Kiersten (Swain) has been pitching well and the defense has been playing well, particularly Zhen Reuter at second base. And today, Meadow (Gambacurta) and Caroline (Logsdon) had nice games at the plate.”

Reuter (1 hit, 2 walks, 3 runs) and Logsdon (4-for-4, 3 runs) set the table for Gambacurta, who came through with a 3-for-5 outing, with a double and 5 runs batted in.

Swain went all 7 innings, giving up 7 hits and 3 earned runs, while walking none and striking out 7.

BASEBALL
Northern York 1, Greencastle-Antrim 0: Carter McCauley pitched a fine game, but the Blue Devils could not get on the scoreboard and dropped a narrow Mid Penn Colonial game against the Polar Bears on Thursday afternoon in Dillsburg.

Greencastle (7-8, 6-6 MPC) put runners at second and third with one out in the top of the seventh, but had a strikeout and pop-up to end the game.

The fourth inning was even more deflating. With two outs, Nolan Sullivan and Cam Rakaczewski hit back-to-back singles and then moved to second and third on a passed ball.

“Avery Horst then hit a screaming line drive right down the first base line,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said. “I swear their first baseman was diving before the ball hit the bat, because that’s the only way he could catch it. But he did.”

McCauley had a very efficient day on the mound, needing just 55 pitches to get through 6 innings. He tossed a 3-hitter with no walks and 7 Ks.

Shaner said, “I was really proud of them today. We challenged them in practice yesterday and we responded. We played flawless defense. We just need to build from this — the talent is definitely there.”
