SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 2, Cumberland Valley 1: The Trojans took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning and pitcher Kori Leedy did the rest as Chambersburg picked up a huge victory over the previously unbeaten Eagles on Thursday night in New Kingstown.
Leedy hurled a 3-hitter, walking one and striking out 6.
“Kori was phenomenal with her offspeed pitches,” Trojan coach Chris Skultety said. “She kept changing speeds and even the CV coach agreed with that. They hit a lot of fly balls and we played stellar defense behind her.
“Malia Cramer made two diving catches in centerfield, and caught a fly ball by (Sydney) May at the fence to lead off the seventh.”
Chambersburg (8-2, 5-2 MPC), which has won 7 straight, scored a run in the top of the first inning off May, CV’s ace pitcher. Bree Paetow beat out a grounder to third for a leadoff hit, and promptly stole second base. Karley Skultety hit a ball to second base that went for a hit and Paetow motored around third to score on the throw to first.
After a hit by Addison Gsell and a stolen base, they had runners at second and third with no outs, but May got out of the jam.
The Trojans made it 2-0 in the top of the second. Kylie Perry singled to lead off. She stole second base and crossed the plate when Paetow knocked an RBI base hit.
Skultety said, “We stung the ball pretty well today at times. But I was nervous because we had some other chances with the middle of the lineup and didn’t cash in. Lots of times that comes back to haunt you.”
The Eagles (7-1, 6-1 MPC) got their run in the bottom of the second when May singled, moved up on a walk and an error and scored on a sacrifice fly.
Leedy then sat CV down 1-2-3 for 3 straight innings. In the sixth, the Eagles had runners at first and second with 2 outs and failed to score. In the seventh, they got a one-out hit, but Chambersburg ended the game on a double play when Skultety, the catcher, caught a pop-up and doubled the runner off first.
The Trojans produced 8 hits off May, including 3 by Paetow and 2 each by Gsell and Perry. May struck out 8 and walked none.
Coach Skultety said, “Paetow was havoc on the bases today and we need a shoutout to Kylie Perry, who had two hits and made some nice catches in the field.
“It’s always a battle with CV and Central Dauphin — whoever gets the timely hit or a defensive play is going to win. We want to play in these games because they make us better.”
BASEBALL
Chambersburg 7, Cumberland Valley 1: The Trojans put it all together Thursday afternoon at Greene Township Park and sent the Eagles home after taking a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory.
Chambersburg (2-8, 1-6 MPC) snapped a 7-game losing skid with the win.
“We finally put together a complete game,” Trojan coach Scott Folmar said. “It’s nice to get a win like that against a good team. Hopefully, this game will give the guys some confidence and maybe we can start to put together some wins.”
Kadyn McMullen pitched the first 5 innings for Chambersburg and he held CV to one run, 5 hits, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Harrison Benedict then took over and pitched the final 2 innings, giving up 1 hit, 1 walks and 2 K’s.
Folmar said, “McMullen did exactly what he needed to do — he had only two walks and got them to hit a lot of fly balls. And since we had the lead, we were able to send him back out there for a few innings.”
The Trojans got off to a good start, scoring in each of the first 4 innings, including 2 in the first and 2 more in the second, to give McMullen a lead to work with.
In the first, Keaton Barclay and Brady Truett produced RBI base hits. Chambersburg loaded the bases in the second on singles by Ryne Mills and Evan Brown and a walk to Barclay. Two runs then scored on an error by the Eagles (6-2, 3-2 MPC).
Kam Mauriello led off the third with a base hit and Brycen Murray got a bunt hit that pushed Mauriello to third. Murray got into a pickoff rundown and Mauriello was able to cross the plate.
In the fourth, a Wyatt Martin single, a walk to Barclay and a hit by pitch loaded the bases and a grounder by Brady Truett scored a run. Barclay walked in the sixth, moved up a base on two ground balls and scored on a wild pitch.
Folmar said, “We got some hits when we needed them and they helped us with some walks (7), and we were able to put some innings together. It’s like the script was flipped on a lot of our games lately.”
Every player in the Chambersburg lineup had a hit except one, and Mills had two. Barclay was walked 3 times.
