SOFTBALL

Kiersten Swain went the distance for Greencastle (6-0, 4-0 MPC), allowing only 2 hits, 4 walks and no earned runs, while fanning 11 Waynesboro (2-5, 0-4 MPC) batters.

G-A coach Mark DeCarli said, “We played well in all three phases today — hitting, pitching and defense. We’ve been struggling some on defense, but had a good game today.”

Caroline Logsdon cracked a 2-run home run to start the third inning and a leadoff triple in the sixth; she finished with 2 hits and 3 RBIs. Zhen Reuter was 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot.

Kaidyn Zimmerman and Kindal Rice each posted a pair of hits, and Meadow Gambacurta smacked a 2-run double.

DeCarli said, “We’re four-deep with pitchers, and its nice to have that many good arms. With our hitting, top to bottom we’re balanced and have power all the way through the lineup. We’re making pitchers work for it and when we get our pitch, we’re hitting it.”

Greencastle, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A in District 3,  will have some challenges next week, with games scheduled against Northern York (5-1), Big Spring (4-2) and South Western (7-0).

BASEBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 9, Waynesboro 1: Carter McCauley fired a 4-hitter to help lead the Blue Devils to a big Mid Penn Colonial victory over the Indians on Thursday afternoon in Waynesboro.

“It was nice to see us play up to our potential,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said. “We respect their program, and it’s tough to win games there, so it was a good win for us.”

McCauley walked one, struck out 8 and gave up just one earned run.

“He pounded the strike zone,” Shaner said. “We felt if we could get a couple of runs that might be enough the way he was throwing.”

Greencastle (4-2, 3-1 MPC) led 3-1 after 4 innings, but then put up 5 runs in the fifth to pull away.

Andrew Weaver (2-3, double, RBI), Elvin Robles (2-3, RBI) and Nolan Sullivan (2-5, RBI) each had multiple hits for the Blue Devils. Bo Brookens, Bryce Davidson, McCauley and Landon Myers each had a hit and an RBI (Brookens and Davidson had doubles), and Cam Rakaczewski had a hit and 2 runs.

Waynesboro is 2-4 (1-2 MPC).
