SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 5, Mifflin County 1: The Trojans had just one more hit than the Huskies (8-7), but Chambersburg made better use of them and earned a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory Wednesday afternoon at Norlo Park.

Malia Cramer

“Today is what is known as playing the next day after a trip to State College,” Trojan coach Chris Skultety said. “We came out a little sluggish and the cold, windy weather didn’t help. But we found a way to manufacture some runs  and played solid defense again.”

Chambersburg (4-2, 2-2 MPC) scored a run in the first on Bree Paetow’s hit, a stolen base, a wild pitch and Karley Skultety’s sacrifice fly.

After Mifflin County (1-2, 1-2 MPC) tied the game, the Trojans made it 2-1 in the fourth. Malia Cramer walked, stole second, moved to third on a hit by Kori Leedy and scored on a double steal.

In the fifth, Paetow led off with a bunt single, stole second and scored on an error. Another error put runners at second and third and Cramer’s fielder’s choice grounder brought in the fourth run. In the fifth, Kendall Flory singled and was bunted to second by Erissa Varner. Paetow’s third hit scored Flory with the final run.

“We hit some shots early, but they made every play until those errors in the fifth,” Skultety said. “The girls are starting to settle into their roles, and the bottom of the lineup had some hits today, which was nice, because we’ll need them to get going to get where we want to go.”

Paetow was 3-for-4. Leedy pitched the first 6 innings  and allowed 1 run on 6 hits, no walks and 6 K’s. Sanay Jones pitched a one-hit seventh with 2 strikeouts.

Skultety said, “Bree had a nice day at the plate, showing all of her hitting skills.”
