Ship’s Lynch; G-A’s Schmuck earn gold at Tim Cook invite

CHAMBERSBURG — The annual Tim Cook Invitational was blessed with perhaps the finest weather it’s had in its 20-year history on Saturday.

Track & field teams from all over Central PA converged at Trojan Stadium for the season opening invitational and had a chance to stretch their legs with the warm weather.

Area athletes and relay teams had quite a few high finishes, especially in the boys events, but came up with only two first-place efforts.

Jaylynn Schmuck

In the girls triple jump, Jaylynn Schmuck of Greencastle-Antrim leapt 36-0 to take first place by 9 inches.

Derek Lynch of Shippensburg was the only local boys winner, getting a gold medal in the discus, topping out with a throw of 172-4.

Chambersburg’s boys team had a good day, despite not recording any first places. The Trojans came up with two relays that finished second, and four individuals earned silver medals.

The individual runners-up included Daniel Casagrandi in the 400 (time of 50.87), Liam Kirkpatrick in the 1600 (4:31.21), Kaden Rife in the 3200 (9:32.17) and Jon Dawe in the 300 hurdles (41.22). Dawe was also third in the 110 hurdles in 16.50.

Chambersburg’s 4 x 100 relay team of Kason Besecker, Imari Watson, Blake Mallast and Antonio Harrison took second in 41.57, while the 4 x 800 team of Rife, Kirkpatrick, Boston Vincenti and Aiden Alleman were the runner-up in 8:14.04.

Trojan boys coach Jim Boyer said, “Our 4 x 100 team ran the second-fastest time in school history, and the guys aren’t at 100% yet, with some of our legs recovering from injury and illness. The top four teams in that event all went sub-42, even with a strong headwind down the homestretch.

“Our most outstanding individual had to Dawe. In addition to his two hurdles races, he ran in the 4 x 400 relay team that took fifth place.”

Daniel Casagrande

Greencastle’s Noah Parks came within a whisker of winning the 800. His time of 1:59.47 was just behind first-place David Moran of Annville-Cleona (1:59.40).

Drake Wagner of Shippensburg took silver in the shot put (49-4.25) and Waynesboro’s Ben Williams also picked up a second-place finish in the javelin (166-2).

In the pole vault, area athletes took 7 of the top 10 places — Luke Mertz of Chambersburg was fourth, Joshua Lynch of Waynesboro took fifth, his teammate Hayden Nolan was sixth, Logan Snyder of Ship took seventh and G-A’s Joe Lofton and Jack Harper and James Buchanan’s Colby Sweeney all tied for eighth.

In addition to Schmuck’s win in the triple jump (she was also 6th in the long jump), area girls took two seconds.

Greencastle’s Bailey Hurley tossed the discus 121-5 to finish just over 6 inches behind the winner in the discus, while Jaeda Dockman of Waynesboro was second in the high jump wit a height of 5-0.

Chambersburg’s girls had a third and two sevenths in the relays.

“I was very pleased with all three relays,” Trojan girls coach Chris Monheim said. “They all dropped some time today and should continue to do so. Mady Koons in the 1600 (4th), Brook Boone in the 3200 (5th), Olivia Coy in the triple jump (5th) and Alaina Morris in the pole vault (4th) all had top-5 performances.

“The weather was really nice, but I do think the wind definitely affected some times.”

Team scores are not kept at the Cook, but McCaskey of Lancaster had a great day, taking 3 gold medals in the boys events and another 5 in girls events.
