BASEBALL
Central Dauphin 6, Chambersburg 4: The Trojans scored 2 runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead over the Rams, but CD came right back with a 4-run bottom of the inning to post a Mid Penn Commonwealth win Thursday afternoon in Linglestown.

Harrison Benedict

In the top of the sixth for Chambersburg (1-3, 0-2 MPC), Ryne Mills walked and got to third base on a hit by Keaton Barclay. Wyatt Martin scored Mills with a sacrifice fly and Barclay moved up to second. He then scored on a base hit by Harrison Benedict to put his team up 4-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Rams (2-2, 1-2 MPC)) loaded the bases on a hit batter, a hit and a walk, then produced a 2-run double by Connor Hevel and a 2-run single by Alex Scaringi.

“We took some really good at-bats throughout the game, but we just need to get that one more big hit to open things up,” Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said. “We gave ourselves a chance in the seventh, but came up short.”

In the fourth, the Trojans scored twice on a pair of errors, a single by Mills and an RBI single by Barclay. In the seventh, Chambersburg got the first two runners on base on an error and a double by Brycen Murray with no outs, but could not score.

Barclay had 2 of Chambersburg’s 6 hits. Mills pitched 4.1 innings, allowing 4 hits and one earned run. Brady Truett was charged with the loss.

“Mills gave us another good start,” Folmar said. “He battled out of some jams and settled in through the middle innings.”

SOFTBALL
Central Dauphin 4, Chambersburg 2: The Trojans led 2-1 through five innings, but the Rams scored 2 runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to take a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over Chambersburg at Norlo Park on Thursday afternoon.

Marley Onomastico

‘We’ve got to make the plays (on defense) and we have to start hitting more,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “Half of our team hasn’t ever seen pitching like we have this week. But we’re close — we’re young and we just played two really good teams close.”

CD (3-0, 2-0 MPC) scored in the top of the first on a run-scoring double by Kayla Fletcher, but the Trojans (1-2, 0-2 MPC) tied it in the bottom of the inning. Karley Skultety singled and courtesy runner Ashley Mitchell came home on a single to left by Marley Onomastico and an outfield error.

In the fifth, Chambersburg nosed ahead after the leadoff batter reached on a Rams’ error. Pinch runner Erissa Varner moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sanay Jones and scored on Kori Leedy’s base hit.

CD tied it in the sixth with a one-out home run by Stella Gasper and the go-ahead run scored on 2 hits and an error. In the seventh, the Rams tacked on a run on a single and 2 Trojan errors.

Leedy allowed 9 hits, a walk and 2 earned runs, and struck out 6. Gasper held Chambersburg to 4 hits and no earned runs, striking out 5.

Coach Skultety said, “In the sixth, we’re down one with Karley on first and Gsell hits an absolute laser up the middle. But it hits Gasper in the stomach and sticks in her glove and she threw over to get a double play.

“We had the lead in both games this week, and Kori pitched well both times, but we had too many errors. We’ve gotta get a win tomorrow (at Shippensburg).”

State College 19, Chambersburg 8: The Trojans took on the defending Mid Penn champion Little Lions and were defeated in a Commonwealth game at Trojan Stadium on Thursday night.

“Our offense played well again,” Chambersburg coach Joey Wilmot said. “That’s the most goals anyone has scored on them this year. We are still figuring things out on defense, although Kellen (Sanders) continues to play well in goal.”

Four players split up the scoring for the Trojans (2-3, 2-3 MPC) — Ryan Cosey, Matt Tucker, Blake Dupont and Quinn Makosy each had 2 goals. Makosy also assisted on 3 goals.

Wilmot said, “Quinn was definitely our player of the game. We played very hard and I am super proud of the effort and heart we showed today.”
