SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 11, Shippensburg 9: The Blue Devils survived a wild game in which they made 6 errors and allowed only 3 earned runs to hold off the Greyhounds in a Mid Penn Colonial game at home on Monday afternoon.

“We knew we would be a good hitting team, and our pitching is pretty good, too,” G-A coach Mark DeCarli said. “But we have some things to work out on defense. We were missing Kylie Kerns (out sick) today, so we had a couple of girls out of position.”

A 5-run fifth inning proved crucial for Greencastle (2-0, 1-0 MPC), because Shippensburg (2-1, 0-1 MPC) had just scored 4 in the top of the inning.

Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the third, Caroline Logsdon led off with a single and Meadow Gambacurta followed with a 2-run blast to centerfield. In Greencastle’s big fifth inning, Kiersten Swain belted a 2-run triple, Erika Hoover and Kindal Rice singled in runs and the last scored on a fielder’s choice by Aliyah Masser.

Paiton Gordon pitched the first 4 innings for G-A and allowed 3 earned runs on 4 hits. Swain got the win with 3 strong innings of relief, striking out 7.

Gambacurta was 3-for-4 and drove in 3 runs, and Swain, Rice and Kaidyn Zimmerman each had 2 hits. For the Greyhounds, Alexis Kitner had 2 hits, including a double.

BASEBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 9, Shippensburg 3: Trailing 2-0 after one inning, the Blue Devils put up 5 runs in the second inning and never let the Greyhounds back in it, taking a Mid Penn Colonial win Monday afternoon in Shippensburg.

Bryce Davidson

“”Just a great response from our guys,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said, “We hit up and down the lineup and, outside of the first inning, we played really good defense. I’m proud of our guys for their effort and energy.”

Greencastle (2-0, 1-0 MPC) rapped out 15 hits Nolan Sullivan (triple), Elvin Robles and Bryce Davidson (double) were all 3-for-4. Davidson had 3 runs batted in and Sullivan and Robles each had 2.

Also for the Blue Devils, Andrew Weaver had 2 hits and 2 RBIs and Bo Brookens added a pair of hits.

On the mound, Cam Niland started and went 3.1 innings, while Ben Horst pitched 3.1 in relief. Each gave up just 1 hit. Horst had 2 strikeouts and no walks, while Niland had 6 Ks and 5 walks.

For Shippensburg (0-3, 0-1 MPC), Elijah Bailey and Brayden Ochs notched base hits.
