The Shalom Lady Flames advanced to the PIAA Class AA Girls Sweet Sixteen after defeating the Science Leadership Academy Lady Rockets 60-50 at West Philadelphia High School.
Following a 2.5-hour ride, the Lady Flames started slowly, managing only 8 points in the first quarter, with Emily Rebok scoring 6 points to keep the game close. Meanwhile, the Rockets scored 14 points, leaving the Flames trailing by 6 points heading into the second quarter. However, the Flames picked up the pace, scoring 17 points in the second quarter. Maya Lehman hit a buzzer-beater three-pointer to send the team into halftime with a one-point lead. This moment was reminiscent of the District Championship game, where Lehman hit a similar shot to close the half against York Catholic. Back then, the Flames struggled in the third quarter. Would history repeat itself?
Initially, it seemed so, as the Flames committed three quick turnovers and allowed the Rockets to score six unanswered points. However, the Flames were determined to write a different story this time. Addison Adams led the charge, scoring 11 points in the third quarter, including a clutch three-pointer to put the Flames ahead by two entering the fourth quarter.
The Rockets responded quickly in the final quarter, led by Welly Regan, who scored a game-high 35 points. After Regan’s five quick points, the Flames found themselves trailing again. Fueled by the energy of their fans, who had traveled to Philadelphia, and a well-timed timeout, the Flames took control. They outscored the Rockets 18-4 for the rest of the quarter. Julianna Myers played an exceptional defense on Regan, limiting her to just two free throws for the remainder of the game.
Adams led the Flames with 25 points, while Rebok contributed 20 points. The Flames’ transition game was on point, with Lehman distributing the ball effectively and adding 13 points of her own, playing her best game of the season. These three juniors showcased their selfless play and continued improvement, resulting in their highest collective scoring output of the year. Freshman Sydney Moore also impressed with solid defense against older and stronger opponents. The “Chloes” — Gearhart and Diller — provided valuable minutes off the bench to keep the starters fresh.
Next up: The Flames will face Williams Valley from Dauphin and Schuylkill Counties on Tuesday evening at a time and location to be determined (likely in the Harrisburg area). Stay tuned, clear your calendars, and come support these talented young ladies as they take on their next challenge.
BOYS: The Shalom boys advanced to the state quarterfinal with a 62-40 victory over Lourdes at Chambersburg Friday night and will play Chester Christian Acadamy, the District 1 #1seed Tuesday night at a time and place to be determined.
